I want to start playing guitar, but I know next to nothing as to how to play it. I plan to teach myself using the internet and books. Which guitars are best suited for beginners? Also it has to be affordable (less than $250 CDN, or a bit over), since I don't want to dish out a lot of meny when I dont know how to play.

I don't play guitar, but I do know that Fender makes the best guitar for the price. I'm pretty sure they have some good beginner packages as well.

the best, is fender squire package, that comes with amp and wires for about $150, maybe less. It looks like a strat, but it's for beginners

Start off with an electric guitar (they are easier to play, although more expensive than acoustic). If you buy acoustic I can almost garuntee you will want to switch to electric soon anyway. As far as electric guitars go, search online for a Fender Starcaster, they aren't too expensive and they are good for beginners. You will also need an amp...I got my guitar and an amp together for about 250$. You will probably also want to buy tuner, and picks. The only advice I can give you on actually playing it is to keep practicing, make time every day.

I played that guitar before and no offense it was terrible, I would suggest purchasing an acoustic because they will build your callises faster and there cheaper.  A $250 electric will be a bad investment because it will be an aweful guitar, but you can find a nice acoustic for that price.

Get a Kramer electric guitar from amazon,  they cost around 78 dollars, they're actually worth 299 dollars but there's a big-time discount, my friend bought one and it works great.

Get an acoustic. You may not like it at first, but trust me, it'll benefit you. Acoustic guitars are harder to play than electrics, so your finger muscles will get stronger faster. And face it, you're gonna suck when you first start, so it's not like you'll be doing any face melters if you get an electric instead :P.

But I think you'll have a lot of fun when you first start, whether you get an electric or acoustic first.

On second thoughts, I agree with him. get an acoustic....its hard, but you'll get used to it. Also, your skin on your fingertips hardens quicker, so that could be a good bonus

Yeah, I buy most of my stuff from musicians friend. I hate going to the guitar center near me because everyone who works there act like pricks. I say I want a certain thing and they try and make it sound as technical as possible with a snobby attitude like I'm going to grovel at their ability to work in a guitar store. Give me a break! Anyways back on subject Musicians Friend is an excellent website to buy anything music from.
