I was wondering what people think are the best of this type of movie. I'm talking about the movies where we discover Aliens, or they discover us. Not necessarily a horror movie, something more along the lines of District 9 or Close Encounters of The Third Kind. Movies that deal with the what if aspect of alien contact.

So what are your favorites?

Independance Day and Battlefield Earth are some of my favourites, Still waiting for a good Aliens Vs Humans war movie where it is more of an even fight. They make so many video games with the concept but never any movies.

Contact and 2001: A Space Odyssey are two of my favourites, and of course if you want horror alien movies then Alien and The Thing are no-brainers.

I liked it the first time I saw it... But that horrific cinematography just kills it for me now.

ET like some of the other films noted are more adventure films involving aliens. There is little about man dealing with it. IMO you've got to have some of that to be "about" alien discovery.

Aww forgot about Predator, that would be my #1 choice, and Starship Troopers would be in my top 5. I try not to even acknowledge the existance of the sequels to those movies though.

Good choices listed here already.

One I don't see is The Arrival with Charlie Sheen. I thought that one was pretty good.

Yeah predator is great one of my favorite of all time, i agree with you on the starship troopers - the first one was great but the sequels were pretty much lousy. i cant believe i forgot to put taken on the list as well thats a really great alien movie.

I recommend 2001 also it has incredible special effects for it being a 60's movie and its probably Stanley Kubrick's best film, after you watch it go watch 2010 (the sequel) then go read the books 2061 and 3001 which will hopefully be made into movies someday....I wish :(

3001 was sorta flimsy imo, while passable, it definitely isn't up to the caliber of the previous entries. And on a tangent, anyone ever read "Childhood's End" by the same author (Arthur C. Clarke)? Now, I would kill to see a faithfully made film based on that book, because that is one of my favorite works by him. Sure it's a short novel, but hot-damn is it awesome!

It's either Alien or Star Crystal.
