im starting to notice it realy rare for there to be a great serise(note im saying like the best of the best, like high 9/10 shows or 10/10) to be having a happy ending, they almsot always have just downright depressing and tragic endings and the ones that are happy end up being bittersweet, anyone else notied this, the most recent ive seen was tokyo magnitude 8.0 and that ending made me cry throughout the last 2 min and credits, its just tragic.

i think pretty lowly of higurashi, i honestly dont get why people like it and gurren was bittersweet, remember nia kinda dies, and for clannad an dFMA remember i said ALMOST all the great ones

I have to disagree. The best animes don't have tragic endings, merely endings that are fitting to the character.
I'm going to take a few examples, and the fact is that sometimes the best animes are those that tell the story right without dragging along forever.
One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, they all have SO, SO MUCH episodes and never end.
We can grab Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X and Death Note, animes that ended at their time and can be considered cIassics because they told their story.
Albeit, the Kenshin anime ends at the Kyoto arc for me, I'm waiting for that remake, because the manga has the only real ending for me.

That's something I noticed as well. But I rather like the bittersweet endings.

Sometimes anime's end like real life, without a happy ending :(

Yeah, Kenshin anime after the Kyoto arc ends is (by all accounts) awful. But the Enishi/Tomoe arc in the manga is incredible.

I disagree.

FMAB had a happy ending (except for 1-2 characters)

Beast Player Erin ending made my heart grow 2 sizes that day (the anime ending not the origional light novels ending)

Kanon (newer version)

Angel Beats

Many great anime had happy endings

I think endings that don't end up burrowing you in a pile of fluffy puppies are more realistic.:P I like the endings like FMA where they tie up certain things but always have consequences to the characters' actions. Consequences are the core of human living--whether that's the kind of anime that you define as 'good' or not is up to you.

And whoever listed One Piece and Naruto as examples of GOOD anime need to check themselves before they wreck themselves ;) But each to their own--have fun with that.

Indeed. This is the reason why I am excited for the upcoming remake, where I am hoping the Enishi/Jinchu arc is included.

I sure hope Naruto and Bleach don't have tragic. endings. Although I feel like Naruto will have a tragic ending.

Madoka, Akira, and Evangelion didn't have tragic endings...well, I guess they were kind of tragic from a certain point of view, but within the context of the shows/movies it was about as good as you could have hoped for. Then there's Clannad which had an ending so positive that people felt it brought down the series. Miyazaki films are pretty upbeat as well, and The Girl Who Jumped Through Time had a pretty happy ending. Higurashi no naku koro ni, which a lot of people like (although I personally don't think nearly as highly of it as most people) also had an extremely positive ending which was even more striking given how dark the series was before that. And on a side note, anyone who tried to list Bleach, Naruto, Dragonball, or One Piece in this thread as an example of a "good anime" has either not watched much anime or has terrible taste.

Personally I don't think Tang is a non-tragic ending.
2 people left on earth and neither of them being very sane is pretty tragic imo

Well they outright said at the end that everyone would come back if they had strong enough willpower. And there's some pretty strong hints in the rebuild movies that the rebuilds are actually everything happening all over again in that Tang world (hence the few changes and the announced massive change to the ending), so apparently virtually everyone did manage to come back. Also, you have to appreciate the ending in the light of the series. In the original series the ending was overwhelmingly positive since the angels were defeated and Shinji was able to overcome all of his massive independence and daddy issues. In EoE the ending was still positive because Shinji rejected Instrumentality and thereby thwarted both Gendo's plan and Seele's plan.
I'm kind of agree with Evangelion, it wasn't a tragic ending, more like an open ending.

In which i like to think that Asuka and Shinji eneded together, yep, i like happy endings and i like Asuka (favorite Anime character ever), Rebuild make it happening

Wofs Rain had a sorta tragic ending if I remember clearly and I loved that show.

But my favorite animes are Samurai Champloo, Hajime no Ippo, One Piece. 1 is not tragic, the other 2 are ongoing (Im pretty sure Ippo is releasing another season)

And btw am I the only Asian who find animes to be "meh"?

Death Note has the most tragic but the greatest ending I've seen. I was thoroughly freaked out through the whole episode.

The "best" anime is one that gets you emotionally invested in the characters. Not many shows can do that though.
