I've just finished watching yet another "great" movie in which the whole storyline floats somewhere around the college life. This made me curious about the actual shape of all this fraternities stuff and such. And here is my question to the American students: is there really such an atmosphere (or, more accurately, "religion") with the fraternities? I mean: fraternities for so-called "cool" people (basing on the movies, people like cheerleaders, hot blondies and muscular football players would fit in that category) and different ones for the nerds, immemorial wars between the fraternities, uncontrolled willingness for joining the "coolest" fraternity and therefore becoming "cool" and respected? How does it really look like?

Yes. The Greek system is seriously like that. The rich kid fraternity, the smart kids, the nerdy kids, the Jews, the Blacks, the hot chicks, the fat chicks, the whores, etc.

I can't speak for any fraternities other than my own, but many people want to join us because we are known as really cool people. We throw the best parties, have the most fun, etc We don't just pick up "cool" this though as many fraternities do. We pick up people that we have a lot in common with and can potentially see as our brother. If they fit those characteristics we give them a big to pledge our fraternity. It's almost like a gang minus the violence. We also do charity events sometimes where we donate all of our money made to charity. It's not only about being "cool" and getting hot blonde chicks. The only people in a fraternity that gets hot blonde chicks are usually people who already have game. The letter they wear just help with social networking because girls will begin to see you a lot at greek parties and you can begin friendships or ****ships depending on your game of course.

It's not exactly like the movies... but at the same time it's really not that different. It really depends on where you go, though.

Frats are generally a waste of time. I live outside a college town and the only thing they're known for is killing kids each year in drinking binges. I have very little respect for those frats (which are quite a few of them).

Oh, that's really interesting :) I was almost sure that these movies show the world of fraternities way too much grotesque than it actually is and it comes out that it's not THAT different.

And what about the between-fraternities hatred? You know: one "cool" frat interrupts parties of the other one or threatens its members, treats them as "the worse" (let's say: "not worthy of talking with")? Does it happen?

You do know that binging is pretty much illegal and that chapters will be shut down if someone complains about such behaviour. It happens, make no mistake, but its not anywhere near as common as the stereotype would have you believe.

..

Frats are an amazing time, if there is anything that I would say I dont appreciate about frat life would be the dirtiness that will naturally come when you have 30 to a 100 guys living under one roof, drinking, partying and shagging their nights away. In my 3rd year of Uni I moved out, as I needed to get more work done and a little bit of quieter atmosphere. Still there are few places that tear it up like the fraternities and pretty much getting laid, doing drugs, drinking and partying are a way of life. If theres one thing I would recommend is pull out till it becomes your only way of life (I have a couple buddies that are rounding on 7 to 8 years of undergrad)

Haha yeah same here which is the same reason I'm sort of pulling out this year to focus on school. i only joined last year, but it really messed up my grades. I'm still going to support my fraternity and goto some events, but y main focus is going to be school because like you said there are people who are super undergrads. My chapter doesn't have a house because we live in Brooklyn and no one is willing to spend crazy money for a house, but when we did have a house last year it was always a mess after a few minutes.

In my Uni there were 9 fraternities, all governed by an inter fraternity council. You did not throw big events on the same night and generally each week would be split up to account for all possible big events. So no this did not happen. I guess worth nothing was there was one fraternity whose members were not always the biggest delight, but that could have been with just the boys in my frat

We got lucky, Uni funded the housing for all the frats (house for each chapter), but placed us all as next door neighbours to the police. Basically if things ever got too out of hand the popo wear nearby to make it boring again. My grades took a hit as well, but by the end I got pretty good at earbudding it and powering down.

OK, thank you very much :) And what about the (I don't know how it's actually called) "entrance ceremony" for the newbies? Is this like in the movies: bigger or smaller messing with the newcomers for some time or pseudo-mystical taking an oath in a dark place or any of such movie-like things? :)

Different for each fraternity, and no one who considers themselves a half decent frat boy would tell you any specifics. The good news is that Im sure that everyone leaves with their anal virginities intact

This... Also although none will admit it hazing does happen depending on fraternities or chapters etc. Some fraternities don't haze at all though. If you're interested in joining a fraternity at your university just go around and meet some members and see which 1 interest you most.

Hehe, I knew that most likely no one would answer such questions but it's always worth trying, isn't it? ;) Anyway, I feel relieved by the assertion you made in the second sentence designer- :D

bigblunt537: I'm not even thinking about joining any frat since something like 8500 kilometres in a straight line part me from any :D

OK, thank you for all the information, guys. If I come up with any other questions, I'll surelly hit with them here ;)

These two got it spot on. I'm not so much a very social guy so I tend to stay away from fraternities. I'm not a drinker either so that's another reason. I met some really cool people who are in fraternities but most of them don't have anything in common with me. I just stay in the gaming club, anime club, and kendo club. Those people, I can relate to.

It's surprisingly true, however in my experience the "loser" fraternities aren't really aware of what they are
