Whenever I turn on MSNBC, which I suppose has a left-wing bias, I see constant discussion of race and race issues and hardly any talk of the real economic issues facing the nation. I come on this forum and see people call the RNC racist cause there was mostly white people in it. Yet somehow they forget that some speakers were nonwhite (Rice, Nikki Haley the Indian from SC, etc) and most African Americans vote Democrat (overwhelmingly, 94%). In the Republican party (or at least, in more moderate to conservative circles) there is never a discussion of race. People are assumed equal, and thats it. No special priviliges, no special status, nothing. As an Arab-American I find this far more inclusive that the race-baiters on the Democratic side that always mention how downtrodden one group is or another. If you are downtrodden as a group, pick yourselves up! This doesn't just go for African-Americans, but for any group. The more you talk about race in a political setting, the more of an issue it will be. When we stop discussing race, then we know that equality has been achieved.

I'm sure this thread will lead to a very thoughtful and eloquent discussion on race.

That's why you don't pay attention to the media. It's pretty much an overpaid joke.

What you're just figuring this out? Democrats have always relied on saying everyone is a racist or a bigot to further their agenda. It's really nothing new.

It's pretty much always Democrats who do it (even though there the ones who supported slavery.)

It doesn't matter if the Democratic party used to support slavery, unless you want to falsely claim that the democratic platform and party of today is the same party of the 1830s. I assume you're not a democrat. BUT you threw that little tid-bit of useless information. Which proves that the democrats are not the only ones who do it. THANK YOU for proving my point without me actually trying to do any research.

it's not useless information, it's an ironic fact that Democrats try to run from. The party is far from perfect like most will have you believe. A lots of people still bring up Nixon's southern strategy too, which certainly was a long time ago and is in no way the Republicans party platform. The difference is that I know the Democrat party has changed since they supported slavery, and so have the Republicans since Nixon pandering to southern racists. Where as a lot of Democrats try to act like slavery is still what the Republicans want for black people. That's race baiting, not bring up a historical fact.

Tell me the year it is. Then tell me if the democratic party party still supports slavery. It may be a historical fact, but it isn't relevant. You're acting like the Republican is above using race. If you truly believe this, you're either A) delusional, or B) hypocritical.

Ever heard of the southern strategy? Just thought it was funny you brought up the 60s of all times. Anyway the Democrats are no longer the party they were 50 years ago and the Republicans are no longer the party they were even 4 years ago. Things change, Reagan would be considered too liberal for the current Republican party.

It's not only naive, but it's also based on the false premise that racism isn't a problem anymore.

Race-baiting? Perhaps a few, but considering the lack of diversity of the GOP hierarchy, race is bound to become somewhat of an issue. When you have discussions of things like the DREAM Act, which would largely affect a specific minority, discussion of race will happen.

As always, it's not as simple as trying to blame one side for this. The TC just wants to get some hate for the Democrats.

It IS relevant when talking about the Democrats race baiting because it's ironic. I never said Republicans weren't guilty of it, but they don't do it nearly as much as Democrats. The Democrats have practically made race their party platform by always trying to scare blacks and minorities into thinking that Republicans hate them. e.g. "Their gona put y'all back in chains" - Biden

Never said they were. I'm prefectly aware that the GOP has some diversity. That doesn't mean that there are bigoted members of the party too. Even on the national stage you get idiots like those who taunted the CNN camera woman. Are there racist Democrats? Sure. But since the 60s the Democratic party has done far more to bring in minorites than the GOP.

See the Southern Strategy for what the GOP has done.

In the bolded text you proved my point I made in my previous post. So, to that, I would tell you to see the Democrats support for slavery for what they have done.

Also, just name for me a couple of examples as to what the Democrats have done to advance minority groups. I sure know that blacks wouldn't have the rights they do now if it wasn't for Republicans fighting for them. I also know that the Democrats have not made blacks better off, despite their overwhelming support for that party.

You did read that the Southern Strategy is the GOP supporting racial discrimination among withe Southerners in order to win elections. The Southern Democrats revolted in the late 40s when other Democrats began to seriously vote for civil rights. There are some in the GOP who seem to abhor the Southern Strategy, but I don't see them as a majority yet.

I simply do not understand how you can say that the Democratic party has done nothing for minorities. The New Deal was very beneficial to minorities, as well as the Civil Rights Act. Democratic politicians continue to support legislation that promotes equality, support for minorites, women and the gay community.

I feel like a freaking political commercial here.

Reagan would be considered too liberal for the current Republican party.Ace6301
Socially I'd agree with that, but economically? With how bloated these guys' policies and budgets are it's safe to say they're pretty comparable to Reagan. The reactionary neo-con backlash of the mid-late 2000's is what has really been killing the party to me. "Smaller government" through increased deficit spending doesn't really make much sense to anyone but liberals, and at least they're honest enough to say that it's bigger government. :P
