FBI director: Cover up your webcam

The head of the FBI on Wednesday defended putting a piece of tape over his personal laptop's webcam, claiming the security step was a common sense one that most should take.

“There’s some sensible things you should be doing, and that’s one of them,” Director James Comey said during a conference at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“You go into any government office and we all have the little camera things that sit on top of the screen,” he added. “They all have a little lid that closes down on them.

“You do that so that people who don’t have authority don’t look at you. I think that’s a good thing.”

Comey was pilloried online earlier this year, after he revealed that he puts a piece of tape over his laptop camera to keep away prying eyes. The precaution is a common one among security advocates, given the relative ease of hacking laptop cameras.

But many found it ironic for Comey, who this year launched a high profile battle against Apple to gain access to data locked inside of the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino, Calif., terrorists. Many viewed that fight as a referendum on digital privacy.

Comey was “much mocked for that,” he acknowledged on Wednesday.

But he still uses the tape on his laptop.

“I hope people lock their cars,” he said. “Lock your doors at night… if you have an alarm system, you should use it.”

“It’s not crazy that the FBI director cares about personal security as well,” the FBI director added. “So I think people ought to take responsibility for their own safety and security.”

Mark Zuckerberg does the same. This is the world we live in. So OT, do you cover your webcam like a paranoid or do you want the world (hackers/government) to (potentially) watch your awesome exploits?

And if you don't cover your webcam, what would the world see? Share your thoughts OT.

Not sure why anyone would want with some video footage of me using a laptop. If you're someone of high profile the precaution makes more sense.

This is only for high profile people. People aren't really phishing for cam exploits because you don't gain much. This is a non-issue to 99 percent of the population.

Every selfie cam or PC cam I own is covered, **** the NSA, FBI, and all other scumbag hackers. Don't really care if people don't attempt to hack the crap I own, I just choose to deny them all as much as possible.

I don't have a laptop or a webcam but if I did I'd make sure to always use the computer naked. If someone's gonna watch I'm gonna give 'em a show. It may be a horror show but whatever.

I don't own a laptop. If I did I would cover up the camera. Some guy from India added my sister on facebook then messaged her a bunch of pics of her and her room that were taken from her laptop's camera...

No, I pity anyone that would want to look upon me and my surroundings.

Literally nothing to gain from it, unless you're a chubby chaser. In that case....how you doin'?.

Your sister may have downloaded some free program or visited a site that had an exploit that allowed the guy from India to get remote access to her laptop. Simply adding someone on Facebook isn't going to cut it when you want to hack someone's computer.

Yeah of course. She was known for downloading a lot of stupid shit. Creepy nonetheless. She has a post-it-note over her camera at all times now.

Most people aren't important enough to be targeted, at best, you might get some pervert trying to hack a girl's camera in hopes that he can catch her dressing on camera and use pictures or video of it for their own use.

On the other hand, people like the director of the FBI and other senior government officials would probably want to be more careful. Most government laptops don't even have a camera and many of them have WiFi disabled.

My cousin works for the FBI, and they did not have email services within the FBI until a few years after 9/11. It is safe to say they are not on the ball.....

You could have been more specific with your assumption. I thought you were trolling. And no where did I state that he hacked her by adding her on facebook. I wrote that he added her then sent her pics.

No I actually don't, i'm trusting Kaspersky for that protection. But I can see why such a high profile person would do that.
