most people will only say how they truly feel when they are free of consequence and have anonymity. this is why the internet brings out the worst in people. what's the difference between creating an online persona and a real life persona? if anything the online persona will be more honest with his/her opinion. The same friendly neighbour you say hello to everyday is probably abad person.

Please do not be so descriptive in your outline of a bad person. -mod

With anonymity, people don't have to hide who they really are... they can be themselves without fear of being judged. Or they can do the opposite and pretend to be someone they're not, so it works both ways.

We behave different with everyone, I don't act the same with my friends and my parents and I'm not the same person for each of them, for every person I'm just what they percieve from me and the image they create from those interactions.

I think hiding what you want to say is just as "real" as just saying it....it demonstrates that you fear the consequences of what you can say, which is still a "real" approach to life. So...er....yes and no.

you could meet someone real nice IRL, then they be a complete **** on the net. and vice versa. In a lot of ways people show their true feelings more, but those people are hidden beneath a crowd of trolls

I'd also say theres a disconnect when communicating online. Human beings communicate in more ways than just words. Tone of voice and body language are just as if not more important than the words you say. And they are absent on the internet.

How do you determine that the way we act when we have little to no restrictions is our true selves?

Isnt a person also his/her abilitity to act based on the environment? In which case, neither and both the IRL us and the internet us can be considered our real selves.

In the internet some facets of us are more free to be expressed. But that doesnt mean it is 100% our true selves, if we are able to determine that to begin with.

In ther internet, you just get to know a different side of that person. That side is not necessarily more "real" that their RL self.

____

It is true that when it comes to specific beliefs we are more "true" here on line.

But generally, if we are talking about everything "personality" encompasses I think I'll go with what I said above.

Depends on the specific site. On small sites i think people are more honest but on large sites not so much as they're not as close and have room for trolls.

True but there are emoticons and when you get to know someone properly you can judge their mood pretty well by their posts.

I'm somewhat more reserved on the internet than I am in real life for some odd reason. So, I'll disagree with the opening post as some sort of universal rule.

It isn't the same or a adequate substitue to body language and tone. Our brains are developed to respond to those, not emoticons. And emoticons can't portray subtle things like body language does.

I actually find your argument to be quite plausible, TC. Nevertheless, like people have said, it can indeed go both ways.

We may be able to let our inner personality out more than most real life situations would permit, and talk about certain subjects with certain people we never would otherwise, but it's still pretty far from reality. Any one of those conversations lacks the the actual contact you would find in the outside world. Words are only a small part of a conversation, and the internet can't imitate real life in that regard... yet.

Agreed.

The Internet is the only place that isn't afraid to show that the whole world is dicks. All of it.

Anybody that takes the internet seriously is an idiot. It isn't real.Poll
Glad it's only 10% of OT that are so narrow minded they should be legally blind. Anyways, I go with the first option. Of course if people want to be literal, nothing can beat reality in terms of...well "reality". But I believe the poll is suggesting our true feelings being out there and how much the internet affects our lives to it as well, in which case, EHarmony, Match, MSN, Facebook, MySpace, and many more have been the cause of love, marriages, depressions, suicides, and so many more actions we humans have made in "reality". In which case, the internet can easily be a reality to someone just as much as the "real world". (Unless you're like me and actually treat both worlds the same. I don't troll, because it's idiocy, so....)
