I'm glad i didn't buy one, as i was just reading the paper and it turns out Apple are unveiling a new and improved iPhone tomorrow, less than a year after they launched the first one.

Apple will launch its sixth-generation iPod tomorrow. Industry experts say the latest version of the digital music player will have a widescreen for users to watch downloadable movies and TV shows. It is also expected to be operated by a touch-screen like the company's iPhone mobile.

The fifth generation ipod - launched in october 2005 - plays video but on a small screen. The new device, which is the size of a credit card, will be unveiled in San Francisco by Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive. He will also announce a shake-up up of the entire ipod range according to investment bank, Goldman Sachs. The music players, including the nano and shuffle, will be revamped to give greater functionality at existing prices.

Also being developed is a miniature version of the iPhone and software allowing users to read books on their iPods. Apple is also working on giving all of it's music players internet connectivity.

So many iPods.

The iPhone was obsolete when they announced the details. Only people who buy it are Apple fanboys/girls or the confused public.

Actually I think it may be the i-phone nano. A scaled down version of the i-phone with limited functionality of the original. And just because its "obsolete" doesnt mean its not still funtional.

Ya, but Apple comes out with it's 6th iPod and everyone will praise it and rush to the stores. This thing is going to outsell the Zune in 1 week. So sad. I can see it already:

"Look I just got the new iPod and you turn it sideways to view the movies in widescreen! how cool!"

That's the part where I smash my head into the nearest wall.

And for the phone, all I need is a cheap cell that makes calls. Why people need e-mail/internet and all that junk on the phone is beyond me.

I can see that as a needed function for the businessman on the move and they don't want to carry a bulky laptop around. Other than that, you're right.

That and the trickle down effect apple technology seems to have on the portable device industry. Look at how the i-pod design infulenced the portable music player over the last 5 years. The i-phone, while not practicle for all, will help usher in an age where portable devices will become streamlined and touch screen will be standardized with many features built in.

Good to know I'm still buying a Zune. :D

There's either a new iPod every year, or they announce another piece of hardware to their already pathetic collection.

True... but at $600 for an iPhone right now, there are much more cost-effective solutions. Down the road when the cost of production goes down, those features will be cheap enough to warrant a purchase.

Yeah, I still think the cost will come down as other companies try to come out with touch sensitive devices to compete with the i-phone. Any company making a similar product will want to claim their "i-phone killer" is the cheapest and offers more features. Touch screen will be one of the things these devices must have to compete. So eventually I can see a whole slew of affordable i-phone like devices on the market, especially when they release a $200 or less i-phone nano. Plus, as far as the i-phone touch screen, it is obsolete compared to some new emerging touch technologies.

Apple constantly update their products. That's just how they do things, so it's not the iPhone specifically.

Apple sucks

charging 600 bucks for a 200 dollar piece of equipment, croooks

R-Dot-Yung
who in their right mind would pay that much, especially when you can get a freakin' PS3 for $500. Unless they hate videogames.

If by incredible touch user interface and unparalleled internet funtionality you mean obsolete, then you'd be absolutely right. Lest we forget a little thing called firmware updates, negating many hardware limitations.

Except the iphone does it better then any other phone out. You know how tedious it is to type a text message to someone on a regular phone? Also being able to listen to music, surfing the web and checking my email at work is very satisifying

As it is the iphone is a great idea that will catch on eventually. As of now it isn't a sound investment IMO. Already they announced a new version and the longer we wait, the better off we'll be. The same holds true for ipods. Honestly who here still has the original ipod and how much did it cost at the time?

Truth. Combining all of those portable electronics into one piece of tech is very convenient. The iPhone is a step in the right direction. Something like a precursor for the gadget of the future. :o

thing is people don't NEED a friggin touch screen. "Look at my 1337 touch screen!!!" "Don't you have to clean it pretty much every day???". Why exactly is pushing buttons too hard to comprehend??
