For those of you that have seen the Lord of the Rings Films and or read the books, what was your fav part of them? Did you think they were too long?

so far I have seen all 3 of the films and I'm reading the Fellow ship of the Ring right now. I do have to say that I liked the Films way better than the book so far. I can't seem to read more than a few pages at a time of the book and its taking me a really long time to get done with said book.

Books easily, the films didn't have the depth of the books which was what i liked about them even though the batle scenes were pretty awesome

They are kinda hard to keep reading though are'nt they? I took a month reading the fellowship and I'm on the Two Towers now.I love the books though, and the films ... I can't decide.

The books, hands down. There is sooooo much backstory in the middle-earth universe. Tolkien created an entire world and you only hear about it in bits and pieces of dialogue in the film. The films were great, however the books were waaaay better IMO.

My issue is I never read more than about ten pages of a norm sized book and then LotR is so big and the text is smaller I only make it past about two pages before I get bored. Its gotten so bad that I started reading the Hot Zone now as well

Yeah, and in LOTR I think the average pages per chapter must be around at least 20 ...I've also started reading another book too, Legend by David Gemmell :P

The films did a better job of summarizing the books than I ever thought possible. They still lack the detail, of course, but that could be said of any movie translation (except for something like Twilight where there was no detail or depth to begin with).

If pressed, however, I'd rather watch the movies. They have the added bonus of not having Tom Bombadil. **Bleep** I hate him.

I prefer the book more than the movies. The battle scenes are better in the movie but everything else is better in the book I think.

I preferred the films too. My favorite part is probably the Rohan cavelry charge in the third or the battle in front of the Black Gate.

Both are great. The film really succeeds in getting the feel of the book right, even while removing little details that some people got really uptight about. It seems to me that it's one of the only films of this decade that will still be remembered by most people in 30 years.

I think the movies are much better and I read the books before the movies were ever even in production. I think that the movies are just amazingly well done. The books, while they are certainly classic and they might have been groundbreaking in their time, aren't exactly the most entertaining or well paced novels in the world or anything. The movies also can drag on a little at times, but that's kind of what they had to work with.

I loved the movies and The Hobbit. I read The Fellowship of the Ring in fifth grade and enjoyed it, but I remember scenes in the novel that were just too lengthy and boring. Maybe if I gave the books another chance now (eight years later) I'd like them more. :P

The films are the best possible interpretation capable in a less than 10 hour time frame. The books however are masterpieces of modern fiction. They go well beyond anything in terms of depth and description. Heck, the films wouldn't have been as good had Tolkien's descriptions not been so detailed.

I personally wish I had read the books before seeing the films... while reading the books, I couldn't get Viggo Mortensen out of my head as Aragorn. Pretty much from this point on in my life, I will always read the book before seeing the film. My most recent example of this is Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. I doubt I would have appreciated the film as much had I not read the novel.

Lord of the Rings is the one case in which I find the movies to be better than the books. They're just so much better. Seriously. I don't care about the wonder and content of the incredible brunch being had. A nice 2 second visual of such a meal is sufficient for me.

Anyone who's done both should tell you the books are better duh. Maybe it's cause I read the books way before the movies were released.
