  1. The Martian - $15,900,000
  2. Goosebumps - $15,500,000
  3. Bridge of Spies - $11,365,000
  4. The Last Witch Hunter - $10,825,000 [new release]
  5. Hotel Transylvania 2 - $9,000,000
  6. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension - $8,200,000 [new release]
  7. Steve Jobs - $7,270,000
  8. Crimson Peak - $5,560,000
  9. The Intern - $3,855,000
  10. Sicario - $2,950,000

[Just to mention a few new releases]

  • Rock the Kasbah - $1,509,816
  • Jem and the Holograms - $1,320,000

Well talk about a turnaround for The Martian to say the least. Paranormal Activity, I'm just burn-out from those movies and I guess the audience are tire of the series as well. The Last Witch Hunter going into number 4, that's brutal, even for Vin Diesel. Nothing new for me to see and probably nothing for me until Spectre is release next month.

agree with this, I'm a big fan of the director, but it was awful, go see goosebumps instead.

I thought The Martian was overrated, I think it would have benefited, like Gravity, from an antagonist. Instellar, on the other hand, was excellent IMO.

Good to hear about Crimson Peak, I was considering that. Bridge of Spies is on deck.

I couldn't bring myself to go see Crimson Peak despite Loki was in it [LOL] but the whole plot looks boring as hell. This is a Redbox indeed.

I enjoyed The Martian. You know who else reportedly got an early viewing and really enjoyed it? President Obama.

Not sure if it is even redbox worthy. It BARELY qualifies as a horror movie. I know Del-Toro movies tend to be more of dramas than actual horror movies, but this one takes that to a whole new level.

It isn't scary, the plot sucks, and to top it off there are so many "dumb" moments by characters ESPECIALLY during the finale that it just leaves you facepalming...

@AFBrat77: Wait what was Gravity's antagonist beyond space?

EDIT oh wait are you saying that both films would have benefited from an antagonist? If so I think nature can be just fine as an antagonist.

The Martian was an amazing movie! If anyone here has not read the book, I would highly suggest it! It fills in some of the timeline gaps from the movie.

Paranormal was released in half the theaters as the top five, so it shouldn't be any surprise. I give it a c-, they finally concluded the storyline, and it had pretty good mix of humor and jump scenes. The repetitiveness and bratty girl were about the only negatives.

I just want to know who exactly was the target audience was for Jem and the Holograms--the director alienated original fans of the show by eviscerating just about everything that the show was known for, and tried to make it relevant to modern audiences by playing up the social media angle--and wound up with one of the worst openings for a major studio release. Now he's facing some pretty harsh backlash, and any plans he had for a "Hasbro Cinematic Universe" is dead in the water...thank god.

I had no idea Jem was a cartoon. My guess is, they probably wanted to see if they could corner a teen girls market like Transformers and the like has for boys. it's actually kinda daring to even try doing Jem because, unlike Transformers, it hasn't been revitalized multiple times over the years. They really went the wrong direction though. This should have been more like Josie and the Pussycats if you're familiar with the Hanna cartoon.

Even Ridley Scotts bad movies e.g. Legend are difficult not to enjoy due to how amazing they look.

I wanted to see Sicario but was busy last week. I love a good thriller here and there. I've heard great things about The Martian and Steve Jobs but wasn't too interested so I'll wait. I plan on seeing Bridge of Spies. Tom Hanks is an exceptional actor and I'm a sucker for Cold War/espionage flicks.

I heard Rock the Kasbah flopped critically. Unfortunate considering that the plot sounded interesting.

All they had to do was take a look at the recent Jem comic series IDW has been putting out. They kept all of the original elements of the series, while updating it for modern day audiences. I heard it's been really well received (the handful of issues I read out of curiosity wasn't bad), and some older fans I know really love it as well.

Still, I could think Universal honestly could care less. After having to deal with the failures of Battleship and Ouija, they're not taking any real effort in trying to turn another Hasbro property into a film franchise. The movie only cost them $ 5 mil to make, and after the year they had with Jurassic World and Straight Outta Compton, they won't lose any sleep over this failure.

Now for director John Chu, on the other hand...

Given the money that Paramount is still pulling in from the Transformers movies, and that this underperformed, I don't see the studio trusting the director anywhere near them.

Just like afbrat I think the martian is overrated, true ridley scotts movies do have a certain quality to them but the martian lacks on so many levels and I'm not a big critic at all (I quite like prometheus for instance). So I'm easily pleased and the martian is indeed a pleasant/good film.

But the 8.3 rating on imdb is way too much, especially if you realize that certain good sci fi's only get 7's or sixes. Heck some even go as low as five and are still quite enjoyable. 8.3 is masterpiece material for me and that's not the case with the martian at all.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD

There's not much else happening in the martian than a guy that is left on mars (due to a storm), and they must bring em back. He survives by using materials/food and a habitat there. He also grows his food with the crews faeces that was left there. He uses some old robot that was used in a previous expedition to communicate with earth. He establishes communication with a few quirks, a supply/rescue mission is planned and fails at launch. His food chamber breaks, there is less time , and they use the same crew that was on the way back to get him, to save time.

Once there he has to launch from mars with a craft that is still on the planet to the spaceship that was coming back for him. There goes some stuff wrong, there are some space scenes in astronaut suits and he is rescued. Sadly this last part was pretty much the peak of the film and that is just not good enough for this day and age. What happened in the martian is like a small part of any good space movie. Even if we were talking about realistic space movies gravity is just way way better. There is just happening a lot more.

Of course gravity is only around the iss and is not as far as mars but movies like mission to mars and red planet are just way better than the martian. The only reason this movie is getting such high rating is because we're going to send a manned mission to mars in the near future but once that is happened, the martian will be forgotten like any mediocre sci fi movie, it won't even be a sci fi movie anymore, because we will have been there in the flesh.

For IMDB I always look at the Top 1000 voters score since it usually more in line with my sensibilities. Right now The Martian is at 7.6, I feel that's about right [maybe a tad high].
