I just saw a picture on Facebook, saying:

'Justin Bieber was all over the news for 2 days this week because he cut his hair.

While Andrew Wilfahrt 31, Brian Tabada 21, Ruldolph Hizon 22, Chauncy Mays 25, Christopher Stark 22, Kristopher Gould 25 and David Fahey 23 are all soldiers who gave their lives this week with no media attention.'

This ticks me off. So a teenager with a haircut is in the headlines, but 7 soldiers who gave their lives are not? It's damn pathetic if you ask me.

Yep, Americas media is the "opiate of the masses," not religion anymore.

At least to younger people in my opinion.

Well stop reading those news sources (Reuters and Al Jazzera are good). News is written based on demand. Also i find it weird that you mentioned the US soldiers that have died but not the inevitble insurgents and Libiyan troops which have died. And shouldn't attention be given to the situation in North Africa not just a few soldiers dying?

And media is by product of readers. The irony.magicalclick
i must agree. TC can cry fowl all he wants and rightfully so and he has a valid point. but what do people in the world give more a crap about? 7 dead soliders or hollywood? the answer here for the majority hollywood. most people rather watch hollywood news and read the tabloids and people magazine over pay even a slight minutes worth of attention to whats going on the real world. dead soliders. run away budget. world looming on world war 3 etc.

Pretty much. They are only giving us (the general public) what we want.

So? You're in the minority bud. Who cares about dead soldiers? I've been waiting for the new Bieber haircut for a long time.

The only time I ever hear about this Bieber fellow is in OT.

News channels need ratings. People would rather hear about Bieber than dead soldiers.

Blame Humanity.

Although sad, there wouldn't really be room for much else if the media covered every fallen soldier. Also Bieber got a haircut!? Nice.

Maybe I'm in the minority. But, when I was still active duty (before I retired) I shunned attention and preferred to keep a low profile. I have that mindset because I traveled alone most of the time to many places, including those places that were dangerous simply because I'm an American.

I traveled incognito. I looked like a traveler. I stinked like a traveler. I shunned parades. I shunned welcoming groups at airports. Even the USO didn't know I was a GI until I showed them my ID (so I can sack out in one of their lounges*).

If the media don't devote time to the military, that's fine with me. I like it that way.

*Coming back from some Third World toilet, even the floor carpet was a joy to me.

The quote in my original post mentioned the US Soldiers. I simply used it as an example.

Justin brings happiness to their audience. Can that audience name anything palpable those soldiers brought it?

Same reason why so many people asked what happened to their favourite Japanese game developers these days.

There's nothing wrong about that and there's nothing wrong with giving the audience what they desire. Also I doubt that the media dedicated two days to Justin's haircut while being silent about the soldiers. The Internet is filled with such "deep and thoughtful" images and posts as the one quoted in the OP...

the media reports what people want to hear. In America, its the nonsense that usually gets the most attention. People over here like to put h*** on a pedestal and actors/actresses.

Well it's sad how the 'audience' desire the need to know a popular teenager got a haircut. I know soldiers dying isn't exactly newsworthy, but at least the media should give them recognition for what they did, that's what they deserve and their families.

But that's only my opinion on the matter. Feel free to argue.

The media reports what it thinks will get the highest ratings. It also reports what favours its agenda, mandate or the opinions of it's owners.

i agree. the media needs to start worrying about things that actually matter.
