Yeah, I agree with this. Most start out at as "Grunts". Rangers, Snipers etc...Are hand picked by their performance in the Field.

I don't think that's true. It isn't here,at least. Special units members are usually filtered by Tests and sent to different courses(which have a high drop out ratio). No one in a modern military is judged by performance in combat.

Yeah, That's what I meant. You don't just go into the recruitment center and say "I wanna be a Sniper" :P

as someone said (not sure if it is like this in the US, but it is where I live.

You enlist in the general area you want to be in, and then while a grunt, you may prove skills, that allows for your superiors to nominate you for more specialised branches. (as in you say you want to try going through sniper, spec ops or other kinds of things, and your superior looks at how you have handled, and if it is realistic, if it is, you are allowed to try the trails to get you accepted into forementioned, it is usually really hard and most fail to enter.

But if they from the get go does not think you have what it takes, you will not be able to enter said trails.

lesser things can be taught and accepted without much or any training from the getgo, medicals, and mg crews, are usually picked out of vulanteers, while something like marksmen are often decided on the squads (groups) best shots, equipment recived reflects what you are.

Apart from that, different army bases may have different materiel, so that may end up deciding what you get, more then the designated role you get.

it all depends on your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) in the military.. and it also depends if you go to any special schools that train you on other weapons

Your in listed job and profession determine your weapon.

Though if you get into the special forces area your mission and personal preference decide.

Someone who works on aircraft will not be issued a sniper rifle or sent to sniper school. Once in the field as a grunt, you can volunteer for the Rangers, Airborne, The Green Berets if in the Army, but after you have show proficiency in basic and advanced field tactics. Same in the Marines, you can volunteer for Force Recon, again once you show a mastery of field tactics. Both services have sniper schools and one has to be proficient in shooting and target aquisition. Another requisite is you really need to be good in math. Other than that, you are pretty much stuck with what ever weapons said unit uses. There are those who get to use SMGs and grenade launchers and usually, it's the biggest guys who get the SMGs. HMGs are crew served weapons and typically are a special part of a unit. I am not sure on how one is picked to pull such duty though.

Mission requirments. If you're a standard issue soldier you just get your basic equipment. An M16, ammunition and some grenades if grenades are necessary. A grenadier may carry a grenade launcher and someone who specializes in heavy & light gunnarymight carry a light machine gun.

Also depends on the tactics you would be deploying during the mission. If they plan on clearing a confined area they may issue the scouts some shotguns and sidearmsfor the mission.

Crewmen might carry a machine pistol as well as theirsidearm but pobably just a sidearm.

In most cases a sidearm is useless so unless you need one or can make use of one most units won't bother issuing them to anyone other than those who need them.
