... the United Police States of America!

Yes, that's right. No country imprisons a larger percentage of its population than the "Land of the Free". Not Russia. Not South Africa. Not Saudi Arabia. Not even Iran.

It's kinda funny that many Americans think that the "terrorists" hate America because they hate freedom. A hypothesis more consistent with the empirical evidence is that the terrorists are trying to liberate America! :P

It's because everyone from those other countries immigrated here and got locked up.

Everyone knows that TC. The governors give money to the small towns to build prisons. It saves the small towns, but the money should be going into urban areas where a majority of the crime is happening, in an effort to stop the crime in the first place. But the governors get benefits from having more people in prison. They get constituents (more power) out of the prison population, even though the prisoners are restricted from voting. Kind of a vicious circle, yeah?

RIch countries always have this problem. Also, taking into consideration population and effectiveness of the legal system and the absence of corporal punishment and the long process of the death penalty - I am not surprised.

so your argument is: "we imprison more people because we have a better justice system then those dirty savages. except those other guys. I dunno why they have less criminals. maybe because they're commies."

Yes, that does a good job of summarizing one contributing factor.

This article provides further detail. It dates back to 1999, but it's probably still very relevant.

Yeah, I mean, what could possibly have changed about society since 1999? I mean, it's not like we were attacked or got into a war or anything like that.

A big part of that is because the idiots in charge made laws that put people in jail for possesion of drugs where people often get into worse drugs which further exacerbates the problem and many crimes in general have obsurdly harsh penalties. It's called rehab, use it dammit!

according to this article the UK is well on its way to beating the US in violent crime. Considering people in the UK are reporting to have been to have been victims to violent crime in at higher rates than Americans. (2,034 per 100,000 in the UK compared to 466 per 100,000 in the US).

Ah, now I get it. The prisons are full of terrorists and anti-war protestors!

Hmm... except violent crime in England often means a punch up outside the pub, whereas in America, it often involves handguns.

Been this way for a long time: nothing new here.:P

However, I'm of the thought that Stalin was probably worse: a lot of people went to the gulag that we never knew about.

Yeah, but the regimes of Pol Pot, Mao Zedong and Stalin aren't really yardsticks to be measuring your human rights record against.

It's because prison is an industry in America. It's way more profitable to throw a young black guy in jail than to give him an education; I know some of you might take offense and get upset about this, but it's the truth.
