Ok, so I was just thinking about how computers nowadays are pretty close to the thinking potential of a human being. Well, assuming that in the next 10 years or so computers have caught up or surpassed our potential, then what if a computer was programmed to be a perfect soulmate. This could be scientifically designed to match your psychological, emotional, and intellectual stimuli perfectly. Creating something that you would never want to leave its side, the perfect match. I'm not talking about having sex with robots, just to go ahead and make that clear. But instead something man made that is capable of satisfying all of your mind's needs.

Also, I'm not saying that this would necessarily be a good thing. I'm merely stating that this seems like a very real possibility in the next decade or so.

I'm sorry, but no amount of programming in the world can not--and will not--ever be considered a soulmate for a human. There just isn't any possible way for a computer to ever duplicate the real feelings that two people have for one another. Ever.

How would a person ever experience the feeling that they get when they wake up in the morning and look over to the person next to them, still sleeping peacefully, and think to themselves "Despite all of my flaws, this person loves me. Through thick and thin, they'll be there for me no matter what, and I'll always be grateful for that." How can someone in their right mind have the same experience with a computer?

The answer is that they couldn't. Sure, you could program a computer to say that to a person, but its comments would be hollow and meaningless. Someone MADE it do that, it wasn't from free will. There are some things modern technology can never come close to duplicating.

I'm not really sure about this whole "never ever" thing. I'd say we could easily (well, not with today's current technology) emulate a human and its every aspect, including emotions and free will. We probably won't ever go that far, thanks to the whole Skynet fear, but it would mostly just take the right programming.

Franklinstein

yeah... no thank you

I prefer to be alone and would never want to have someone or something there with me 24/7
