So I just saw a trailer on Facebook for some movie coming out in May called "The Purge" and I think it has potential.

The premise is that in the near future, U.S. crime rates and unemployment rates drop to all-time lows due to the annual 12-hour period (the Purge) in which all crime, including murder, is legal. We're introduced to a family: a father, a mother, a boy, and a girl. The children have arguments over the morality of the Purge but are told by their parents that it's for the best as they turn on their high-tech security system to prepare for the Purge. Soon after, the boy hears a man screaming outside for help, and deactivates the security system to let him in the house. Psychopaths in masks who had been searching for the man show up to the house and demand that he's released, otherwise the whole family dies.

Some people think it sounds ridiculous, but I think it's a fresh, unique concept that looks like it could include both psychological terror and brutal violence.

What do you think?

Sounds screwed up. I'll mark it on my to-watch list.

I'm mixed on it, it could be an interesting horror but there's a fair chance that there could be a lot of logic problems in it. I can think of one right now: Why wouldn't the family just go on vacation if they are worried about dying during the Purge?

Looks interesting. It might garner a checking out once it hits home release. I also wound up on a trailer for a movie called The Colony that looked pretty cool too.

Why in would crime rates drop thanks to a annual murderfest? Seems to imply that criminals do their crimes purely for the sake of doing a crime.

It just seems like a decent concept that's going to be wasted.  All crime is legal for 12 hours--silly, but okay.  Why have the setting in just one location?  I think the idea of a person or group of people trying to survive in a lawless city would be kick-ass.  This however, looks like squandered potential.  With Ethan Hawke, this looks somewhat similar to the remake of Escape from Precinct 13 he did a few years ago--just swap out a the police station setting for a house in surburbia.

I got a feeling this will be released, then quickly forgotten.

I agree, it would have been interesting to have a single group or maybe multiple groups and members of the group/groups get separated or whatever. I had my doubts about the movie as soon as they said someone associated with Paranormal Activity was part of this movie. For some reason people like the idea of a well-to-do family getting scared when this could totally work as a dark, brutal thriller about people surviving on the streets in a lawless society, doing deprived things just to get through the night, I expect this to be a lot of hiding.

Exactly.  They could have the family get trapped outside of safety before this purge takes effect, and focus on them doing whatever it takes to survive.

* Looked up the screenwriter out of curiosity, and the writer of the precinct 13 remake did this as well.

Cool concept, but the stupidity of it would ruin the movie for me. I mean really, all crime legal?

I've seen the trailer a few times, I wonder if this film is supposed to be an allegory with political undertones. Like maybe a subversive attack on libertarian principles of the nightmare of everyone fending for themselves. I'm sure someone will make that connection whether intended by the filmmakers or not, after all Hollywood is an arm of the "liberal media elite". Anyhow, regardless of that this looks like a decent contemporary dystopic vision with potential.

So, erm, does everyone just drop their machetes and guns when the 12 hours are up? It'd be pretty awkward to be in mid-murder when the timer goes out.

I don't see how making crime legal for one day would actually prevent crime happening at any other time of the year. I mean, people do it when it's illegal year-round now, why would it change just because it's legal one day out of the year?

maybe it's about a vigilante society that kills those that don't fit into its model as a means of eliminate dysfunction in the state instead of dealing with the roots of issues regarding crime and poverty

no, not on a deep level, but I think that's the setup, in the end it's just a thriller in a dystopic setting anyhow, in writing this I'm also reminded of that South Park episode where Kyle gives his final solution... My Final Solution By Kyle Broflovski. My dad is the smartest guy in the whole wide world. He has taught me that all poor people are actually things called clods. I wanna live in a world of only gods, so my idea to make America better is put all the poor people into camps. If we get rid of them, there will be nothing but rich people. And there won't be any hunger, poverty, or homeless people. 'Cause they'll all be dead. The end.

I havent heard of it until they started advertising it on every YouTube video known to man.

However it is a horror movie and an interesting one at that which I am a fan of.  I'll see how it turns out in the first week then I'll catch it.

i think its jsut going to show us that everyone can be a monster in a culture of death and war that has escalated to the point where we need whole nights of limitless anarchy in order to get past our problems. ten bucks says they all walk out of the garage door at the end and he's wearing a muscle shirt :P
