I'm not talking about movies that are disturbing with excessive gore, bruatlity, and "pop-out-and-scare-you" moments-- I'm talking about horror movies that are scary and frightening due to direction, atmosphere, etc...

There has been only one movie that has scared me when i was a kid: The Exorcist. I remember i was too scared to go to the bathroom after watching that movie. Now that I'm older, i'm trying to find something that can scare me, and i have been unsucessful thus far. I have nerves of steel thanks to excessively playing the Silent Hill series in the dark, by myself, throughout childhood.

So, i want to watch a scary movie one of these summer nights, by myself, and truely be frightened.

So, i ask: What is the scariest movie ever made in your opinion?

Certainly not the scariest movies ever, but Polanski's Apartment trilogy fits this.

For me, IT. I'm sure no one else will agree, but it's the only movie that I watched once and it scared the crap out of me for years.

I'm gonna assume you watched it as a kid. Watch it again, I can guarantee it won't seem scary.

I did actually, first one I ever watched. And no thanks, I was afraid of my bathroom for four years. :P I'm over it now but I still remember what it felt like and I don't think I'll watch it again.

M Nights ,Avatar the last air bender

Sure we've seen people killed on screen before,

but here we see a great concept slowly murdered for nearly 2 hours by an expired director

The thought that man kind produced this ***** at a profit scares me to the bones

Once again, sammy is right.

Besides those, I'm not really sure what I would call the "scariest movie." I generally don't watch horror movies, but I guess I'd go with the original Paranormal Activity because it's the only one I can recall at the moment that made me scared. Movies like Psycho and Halloween (while great), I'm not so sure I was actually scared while watching them.

This is definitely in my top two. Number one for me is, believe it or not, Signs. Something about the movie from the atmoshphere to the look of the aliens just seem extremly plausable to me (not over the top like Aliens or Predator). Very eary movie, IMO.

I'd recommend that you watch Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, Session 9 and Jacob's Ladder. And though they aren't horror films I'd also highly recommend Mulholland Dr., Eraserhead and Blue Velvet thanks to the disturbing, absorbing atmosphere. Pretty much all of those films have had a hand in shaping Silent Hill or share a similar tone.

Silent Hill is my favorite franchise in gaming and I've tried finding a film that can frighten me as the games do. It doesn't exist as far as I can tell.

When I was a wee kid the original 'The Fog' scared the bejeesus out of me. I imagine it wouldn't now of course I've gone and got myself all growed up but at the time it was harrowing stuff of nightmares. Saying that I also used to be petrified of a large green cooking bowl at the time, so I'm probably not the best litmus test for level of scariness.

Now but still an oldy - Ju On, greatest horror movie ever.

Worthy mentions (not really scary but disturbing and brilliant) - Martyrs

The original Halloween.

Psycho - the shower scene didnt scare me BUT the sister heading up the stairs to talk to the mother....(shivering).

Poltergeist - I saw it at the movies and have never watched it again.

IT had some wonderfully creepy moments - Tim Curry - but the end was rather disappointing.

When I was a kid - The Thing (original). Didn't watch it again until I was grown up and was rather surprised when I realized I had been scared by a giant .....! :D And Night on Bald Mountain (Fantasia). The music still creeps me out.

if you like something that messes with your head, then any of the Paranormal Activity movies are good, Insidious just came out on DVD and I was terrified, but The Orphanage, in Spanish, is pretty terrifying too. That one still 'haunts' me every so often...the concepts in all the ones I mentioned are more scary than the movies themselves.

It's rare to find a film scary, but I got a little creeped out when I watched John Carpenter's The Thing for the first time.

This isn't the scariest film i've seen but its the first one i've seen in a while. The original When a Stranger Calls (78 or 79). The first 20 minutes are damn scary. After that it turns to rubbish.

I didn't see the first one, but I spent most of the second one hiding behind a pillow.
