Hey, i bet you guys don't know what the smallest scientifically measurable amount of time is it? is it a second? No. A nanosecond? Nope.... it is infact! A New York Second! A New York second can be seen by going to New York, and seeing how long it takes between a light at an intersection turning green, and the cab behind the first car at the lights honking their horn!

True!

That's not entirely true. In microcomputing, a jiffy is the time it takes for a timer interrupt. That depends on the processor and the OS. Sometimes it's 1/100 of a second, but not always. On x86 platforms, some operating systems vary. The Linux Jiffy on x86 is 1/250 of a second, for instance.

Anyway, you can read about this here. Jiffy varies not only within microcomputing, but means something completely different within two other disciplines -- electronics and physics. In electronics, it's the amount of time between alternating current power cycles, about 1/50 to 1/60 of a second. In physics, it's the amount of time light takes to travel the radius of an electron. None of those uses are near 1/100 of second.
