Parents that don't dicipline their kids are stupid. When I was little and having a tantrum in public my mum used to say "If you don't stop it now I'll pull your pants down and give you a smack bottom in front of everyone" - that shut me up! Kids are going wild nowadays and it's mostly their parents fault. If you don't know how to bring up your kids properly then don't have them o_O

Yeh I'm glad my mum smacked me as a kid. Nowadays she sometimes flies off the handle and actually punches me but she just lets things build up and I understand that. Parents are losing too many rights nowadays and kids know they can get away with things because no-one can even slap them on their wrists. I don't care what the law says, when I'm older I'm going to smack my children.

That's because it's very easy to abuse a right that would involve permission to discipline your kid, for starters.

That's stupid parenting... pushing your children to be the best. Parents may want the best from their kids and for them to go to uni and be doctors or whatever, however the reality is not everyone can do it or wants to do it. If you don't get a degree, you won't end up a construction worker (I'm basing this on a few adverts I have seen on TV in the US). Similarily in the UK, there are so many joke degrees it's a waste of time for most people to get a degree. I haven't got a degree and I'm doing pretty well for myself. Lol, the country I live in doesnt even have a university (it's only 2.5 square miles :P). I think that parents who try to push their children to greatness are making up for the own failures. It's not the kids' fault that their parents sucked at life lol.

As for bad parenting... take the 13 year old dad story. Everywhere is rife with crap parenting because of the "Politically Correct" world that we live in. It's not just bad parents, it's bad teachers and law enforcement due to ridiculous Government legislation. Bring back using children as chimney sweeps (and occasionally the broom :P)

Why don't we just burn stupid parents? Anyway i hate it when am on a plane and the kid behind me starts kicking the chair and the kids parents are doing stupid super nanny stuff like please stop for me , next time am just going to burn them hopeful-way . Am only 15 and i find it shocking what some of the kids do without they parents slapping them it just makes me wish i could burn them. Also threats are good against wee children such as when i was in the car once and they was snow this little kid was with his parents they were behind him he picked up a snowball and aimed for the car i was in , i seen him stared at him with my evil eyes and pointed at him then slid my fingers along my neck he didn't throw the snowball. I also hate wee kids when i go shopping and they have no respect for anyone and they parents let them off with throwing stuff etc.

That's almost a punishment rather a reward. I wonder what those kids must've done to deserve that.

I won't hit my children. To simple. I will create elaborate punishments instead, designed as a lesson and entertainment.

Stupid parents IMO are:

Parents who think it's a great idea to take an 8 year old to a Nickleback concert.

Parents who take their four year olds to a Def Leppard Concert (I got a baby sitter so should they...)

Parents who allow their 10 year old to sign up for sites like facebook.

Parents who give their offspring'unique' names like Rain and Ocean.

Parents who think their 11 year old needs a cell phone.

Parents who allow their children to speak to them disrepectfully in front of others.

Parents who coddle their children so much that they can not become productive members of society and live in their parents basements.

Parents that allow their 10 year old to drink alcohol because it's a better pain killer than an advil.

Parents who purchase those damn healey's for their children and allow them to roll around stores knocking into people.

Parents who purchase games for their children without finding out if their child should be playing those games.

Parents who have done any/all of the above and then question why their children have grown up so fast.

*Each of the above examples are based on a true story.

Please define 'unique', any more examples than those 2? I'm about to become a stupid parent which I wouldn't want.

Also my parents must be stupid parents cause I have a pretty unique name, though according to local names database my name has become increasingly popular. (At the time I was born there were 2 others with the same name. Around 80 years before that there had been 5)

Indeed. I was well-disciplined as a child by my parents, and I am well-disciplined now by myself. Those I know here who were not disciplined by their parents tend to lack any degree of self-discipline and are, in general, rather self-important.

My parents were stupid as well because my name is a month and back in those days it wasn't near as popular as it is now. I don't think I met anyone with my name until I hit high school. Children are mean and tend to make an example of those with an unusual name or at least that was my experience.

Rain and Ocean are actual children that sat one row behind my family at the theatre. Their mother had to tell them to sit down so many times that by midway through the movie I was singing Rain rain go away in my head. I have a friend who has named her daughter Meadow. My own daughter has a unique name as well, but it's a name from a book it's not just a word I liked and decided to make a name out of it (Apple anyone?)

Would you say that you wouldn't have turned out ot be good people unless your parents beat you up? There are alternatives - these alternatives just aren't recognized by most parents that beat their children or parents that have reckless children.

I guess, parents who treat their kids like crap, and make them feel worthless. Other than that...I'm not really sure. Every parent has different methods of raising their kids, and I'd rather not insult them.

So it's pretty much only names that mean something and can easily be twisted into meaning something else? Here in Finland 'Tuuli' is a really common girl's name and in finnish it means 'wind'. I don't think they've been picked on at school, maybe just cause it's so common.

On the other hand a unique name might be a blessing too. Guess it depends a lot on the kid in question and how he/she handles it. I got picked on a bit cause of my name but it wasn't serious.

Just checked the names database and it seems there's 53 boys called 'Kivi' (Rock) in Finland. Some of them might hear something about their names. Kids named after the show wrestler / actor "the Rock" are not easily bullied though. :P

EDIT: April, May, June and July are nice names and quite common too I believe, at least April is, and I don't think girls with such names get picked on. All the other months I believe might be a bit hazardous.

Yes because a smack on the bum and an occasionally smack to the face = getting beaten up >_> My mum's never beaten me up and I can say that if she hadn't have smacked me as a kid I would've turned out a lot worse. There are alternatives but they don't work. Even kid understands a sharp pain to the bottom. It's operant conditioning in a language they understand.

I would agree here if you said sometimes. Sometimes those alternatices work. As a child I was never more convinced to do something because I was smacked in the butt than my parent having a reasonable explanation and an appropriate tone in his/her voice as to why I shouldn't/should do something. The alternatives are the best ways and they do work, but the other (smacking, yelling) are the easiest and most impulsive and that's why they are being preferred by parents.

[QUOTE="tofu-lion91"][QUOTE="Vanadium2k8"] Would you say that you wouldn't have turned out ot be good people unless your parents beat you up? There are alternatives - these alternatives just aren't recognized by most parents that beat their children or parents that have reckless children.

You'll have to reason with them eventually. Hitting them is only a temporary solution. Why do you think the Jedi are against emotions such as anger in the first place? Because they lead to destruction. You can't teach your kids wrong from right just by hitting them; not saying you meant that.

Those guys who pretend that they are happy they got smacked because of something they did when they were kids, are just saying that to justify why they are doing it for their own kids. Hitting and yelling is the easy way out of kids having problems. Hitting a kid is not a solution, it is a problem. My dad used to hit me every now and then for the most silly reasons, now i hate him as death. He doesn't pay my shrink bills even though he is the one who created my problems. Parents are not to hit their kids unless nothing is working. It shall never be the first thing that a parent uses when the kid disobeys or makes a noise. I never hit my kid, my wife spanked them maybe 2 or 3 times, and I don't blame her for it though. She only used it as a last resort when nothing else worked. My kids get yelled at, sit on the floor, get their games taken away and are to do extra chores in the house when they deserve a punishment. Hitting is the last resort, it is never a right-of-the-bat thing, and never should be.

Jedi? >_> Look I'm really sorry I had to be the first one to tell you this, but Star Wars isn't real :? And of course my mum backed up smacks with proper dicipline and punishments. It wasn't just smacking, it was a combination of things. I think she's been a great parent :)

You can't hardly say in public when a kid's having a tantrum "I'll take away your games when you get home". It's not instant enough. Threatening to smack them is instant and shut me up when I was younger. If your dad smacked you for stupid things or got out of control then fair do's. But you're acting like all kids who received a smack on the wrist when they were younger have mental parents and grow up to be mental themselves.

You are absolutely correct. Thank you for saving time for me to type that out. These guys are getting on my nerves, my parents never hit me and I turned out fine. Hitting is something that you really shouldn't do, because it might screw up your kid. At an early age, kids might think that hitting in public is an accepted thing, and start doing it when they're older. Hitting should be an absolute last resort....I don't understand why people are so proud of it....they probably don't have the best relationships with their parents...

[QUOTE="tofu-lion91"][QUOTE="Impulse808"] That's because it's very easy to abuse a right that would involve permission to discipline your kid, for starters.

To me, having a couple of parents go too far is worth it to keep kids diciplined.

To me, people who go to far get reported to DCFS. Kids don't deserve that at a young age.

Things could've been done so much better, I surely wouldn't want to make my child cry the way they would, I'd be devestated. That said I have never smacked my kids and they're very disciplined :)
