Hello, well I don't believe Ive seen the most films on this board, I can think of a few who I know have great cinematic tastes and have probably seen more than me. However I think I have good taste in films and I think im good at judging what people like. That leads me to the point of this thread; I would like to expand the film Horizons of Gamespot by suggesting and telling you about a film you may like.

How this works is essentially just post and give me as much or as little info as you would like and Il try to make my assesment there. Obliviously the more info you give about yourself the better the chance of you liking the film.

So tell me about what you like and your interests, what are your favorite films, directors, styles, genres etc.. give me as much or little info as you like and il give you my recomendation from there.

So hopefully this goes well and you like my suggestions :D

BTW if you happen to see any of these films tell me what you think about them.

All Suggestions so Far:

The Spy Who Loved Me- Lewis Gilbert

Memento- Christopher Nolan

Mulholland Drive- David Lynch

Oldboy- Chan Wook-Park

Being John Malkovich- Spike Jonze

Vertigo- Alfred Hitchcock

Dr. Strangelove- Stanley Kubrick

A Better Tomorrow- John Woo

The Lives of Others- Florian Henckel von Donnersmark

Pi- Darren Aronofsky

Chinatown- Roman Polanski

EDIT: Please tell me if you have seen the film I give to you so I can give a new one or give yours to another.

I like art/avant-garde/indie type films. Anything that tries to break new ground is cool by me. I think music is very important in films. I guess you could say I like films that have a well-defined mood.

Any movie similar to Killer's Kiss or The Trial (1962) you suggest would be appreciated. Out of all the genres there's only one type i probably wouldn't like and that's comedy, i do like a lot of "cult" movies, so that could help too. The more recent the movie, the better chance there is i haven't seen it yet.

The Spy Who Loved Me- Lewis Gilbert 1977

I tried to stay away from some of the oblivious action adventure type films like the Indy or Star Wars Series, and while James Bond is also a widley viewed series, there are enough films within it to assume one has not seen them all.

This is the best film of the Roger Moore era. I think it fits you desire for an adventure film as many of the sets are in an epic scope such as the under sea base and huge, submarine-swallowing oil tanker. There are great charactors such as the great Bond Villian Karl Stromberg and Jaws. Also great moments such as the famous car chase with Bonds iconic Lotus and the great climactic battle. Overall this Bond has the highest body count and should fit your description very well.

Memento- Christopher Nolan 2000

Memento is a very interesting film and not only Nolans best film but one of the best of the decade. Its a great neo-noir, the main charactor suffers from from extreme short term memory loss and the story centers around him trying to seek revenge for the death of his murdered wife. Whta makes this film interesting however is its unique narrative structure which tells the story backwords. It begins at the end and ends at the begining. This was the first film I thought of when I saw the ones you listed.

Mulholland Drive- David Lynch 2001

I hope you haven't seen this yet. A film by David Lynch is probably the closest you can get to avant-garde while still being in the relative mainstream. There are other I thought of but non with the "well difined" mood you wanted. Its at times highly disturbing, sometimes highly erotic but always mesmerizing. Mybe in my topfive for this decade.

I just watched Seven last night. And each time I watch it, I'm even more impressed by how ****ed up that movie is, and how massive that movie's balls are. The entire third act of that movie is a stroke of genius, and the ending really does blow my ****ing mind, just like John Doe said it would.

My whole reaction to the end of the movie was "Oh hell naw! No they didn't!! Oh my god, they really did!! I can't believe they had the balls to actually do that!!"

Anyway, Seven, IMO, was more shocking and ****ed up than Saw, Hostel, and Audition put together. And it wasn't a gimmick, either. The stuff that happened actually served the story, and the "surprise" wasn't cheap and out-of-the-blue. The movie actually EARNED the surprise, and didn't make me feel cheated. Furthermore, I congratulate the filmmakers for making a shocking, depressing, borderline hopeless movie in which the worst **** happens to the best people, the heroes' best efforts amount to absolutely nothing, and evil total and utterly wins in the end.

For a Hollywood movie, Seven was pretty freaking ballsy. Going out to watch that movie is the epitome of a bad night out, despite the fact that it was a GREAT ****ing movie. And I applaud the filmmakers in actually releasing such an uncompromising movie that wears the audience down and pretty much makes them lose all hope in humanity.

So here's what I want you to do. I want you to assign me a GOOD major American movie that is every bit as ugly and repulsive and depressing and shocking as Seven.

I've been wanting to see a movie like No Country For Old Men, something similar to that where the antogonist pretty much is the main focus of the movie and shocks everyone. I like to see a movie like this where it doesn't give me that typical hollywood ending

Il admit this choice is a bit random. I have yet to see either of those films you mentioned. I almost suggested another Kubrick but thought you may have seen it already. Despite the apparant reach however Im suggesting to you Oldboy, I dont completly know why I feel its a film you will like. I personally feel its a tad overrated but it does have a bit of a cult following and is certainly newer. I dont knw why I just have a feeling.

Its funny, I watched the movie today because last night I was reading through this thread. It sounded good, I watched a trailer, and looked at the IMDb score and really wanted to see it. You are right about the movie and I wish a game was made after it. I loved the tone of the movie (how the world is just so depressing and s****y) and morgan freemans character among other things.

Not really. That's part of what I meant when I said that the surprise wasn't a gimmick, and that the movie actually earned the surprise.

For me it wasn't obvious until I watched the movie for a second time, but they actually do give you some pretty big hints before it actually happens. It's not like they just sprung that surprise on the audience, they actually WERE building up to that ending from the moment Detective Mills and John Doe first "met".

It was a logical and internally consistent way to end the movie. It fit in with the themes of the movie, and they were building up to it long before it actually happened. And they did it in such a way as to not make it completely ****ing obvious. It wasn't something that was so obvious that you could spot from a mile away, but they WERE leading up to it. And on a second viewing, there are some HUGE clues given, particularly in the conversation between John Doe and Detective Mills.

I actually did think that the ending was cheap the first time I watched the movie. But upon watching it again, I had to admit that everything really WAS leading up to it, and that that was just some damn good writing.

Being John Malkovich-Spike Jonze 1999

Alright you said you like dark comedy, well this is definatly a comedy and it's darker than the mood of the film lets on. Also id say its part fantasy. Perhaps not in the visual splendor that Pan's is but in the concept of the film. The idea of a man working on the 7th 1/2 floor of a building and the literal entering of someones mind among numerous other instances. Now Spike Jonze is no Kubrick, he's not a Coen, but like the Coens films (namley Fargo) this film has a noticable charm which can make up for someof its faults. Anyway, I don't think it's what you were expecting but I hope you enjoy it. (I almost recommended another, similar film but though it was more likely you saw it.)

Vertigo- Alfred Hitchcock 1958

This is often considered not only one of Hitchcock's best film but also amongst the greatest film ever made. Is it even my favorite Hitchcock? No. But it is great. This is definatly a great mystery and just plain and simple a great story filled with great charactors. Its a film that deals with fear and obsession and is a great showcase for Hitchcocks directing talents and Jimmy Stewarts great acting ability. Overall this is essential viewing for any mystery fan.

I recently watched That film called Cloverfield and I enjoyed it, I am a very demanding viewer, plotwise i can not STAND shallow films I want movies to tell me something, to express something or tell things they way they were. I love romance and Im quite in touch with my emotional side. I love Japanese, German and Spanish films. I want something that has a bit of Suspense/romance/drama.

My favorite Game series is Metal Gear Solid and Im 19 years old :).

Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Stanley Kubrick 1964

Well this one was easy (perhaps too easy I hope you havent seen it). This is the greatest satire ever and despite all it's charm and fun it's pretty dark, especially for the time with the threat of nuclear anihilation a very real possibility. This is also so far the only film in my top twenty that Ive listed so I hope you enjoy this incredible, one of a kind film.

Oh! Oh! Me! Me! Do me next! Me!

I'd like something European and fairly recent as it always seems like I'm missing far too many films from that part of the world these days. I'm game for any genre as I watch large piles of films as it is and I respect your taste in film so feel free to suggest anything from the quietly poetic to the obscenely bizarre.

A Better Tomorrow- John Woo 1986

A Great 80's Action/Crime film from Hong Kong. The film that put John Woo on the map and made Chow Yun-Fat a star is I think ths film your looking for. I thought about so many choices I could have put down (some admitadley better) but I thought those that seemed oblivious you would one day see without my suggestion. Anyway this is a film told from the criminal perspective which perhaps makes it more unique than other films in this genre which would choose the side of the police. The plot essentially tells the story of two friends (Hong Kong Gangsters) their rise to the top and fall from grace and eventual struggle for revenge. It also introduces an interesting idea by having on of the friends brother be police officer and the eventual conflict between them is great. Not Woo's best but a good starting point to get you into some great action films.

drama

i love movies that just have a great story, i.e zodiac, jarhead(it was good, not great), forrest gump

it can have dabs or other genres in it, but i want something that is very story heavy

The Lives of Others- Florian Henckel von Donnersmark 2006

Please don't be scared by subtitles, there were so many great film I almost put down but I think this one is great because of it's accesability. It really is a great drama, thriller and most of all a great story. One of the decades best and fully deserving of its oscar win over Pan's Labrynth for best foreign film. Fantastic scenes, it portrays a truely frightening east Germany. Don't be fooled by the idea of a film about a man listening to the conversations of a couple, its truely riviting drama. I may also add that while it flounders towards the end trying to find the ending, when it does find it it's PERFECT and im willing to admit I tear up everytime.

I watched The Grudge recently,my 2nd viewing of it.I love true horror movies for some reason.I am also a big fan of movies with a deep meening to them, like movies done by Edward Zwick for example.teh_destroyer

PI- Darren Aronofsky 1998

Ok you were alittle tough. Admitadly I don't watch enough horror (Id love any suggestions you might have). Also im not a huge Zwick Fan. I really don't like Blood Diamond to put it simply and I like The Last Samurai even though I know I shouldn't. So, back on topic: Pi is not an out right "horror" film but it very surreal and is a psychological thriller combined with spirituality and mysticism. Also like you asked its a film that while it may not be deep in a more practical manner its definatly a film to make you think and is filled with philosophical and theological discussion. One of the 90's better films and an early showing of the film methods Aronofsky would later use in his amazing Requiem for a Dream.

MrGeezer

Alright MrGeezer. Three films immediatly came to mind. Two are very visceral and obliviously disturbing and troubling and are film im sure you would like but the third one, the one im recommending im not sure. The first two (Requiem for a Dream and Natural Born Killers) Are easy. They are designed to disgust you and trouble you and they show you everything. There not bad films but it keeps them from being great. So that leaves my the third film...

Chinatown- Roman Polanski 1974

Chinatown is the second film ive listed that would make my top 20. Its perhaps the greatest neo-noir and Polanski's first film after the brutal murder of his wife Sharon Tate. You can see this in his film. Its darker and more disturbing than his previous work. I would hate to give much away but this is an American Materpiece and nothing is perhaps more devestating than the ending of Chinatown.

Its an incredible noir and period piece, with great charactors, chemistry and magnificent scenes. It is a film that doesnt show all its cards and is a great mystery that unfolds itself into something much more sinister than ever previously anticipated.

anyway, if Chinatown doesnt do it for ya the other two might.

Unfortunately, I've already seen all of those movies. :(

Anyway, I didn't like REquiem that much. It was well-done, I think. I just thought that the story was sort of crap, and was filled with total dirtbags who I couldn't give a crap about. The only sympathetic character in the movie was the mom. Everyone else was just sort of stupid.

Natural Born Killers I actually quite liked, and I agree that it was ****ed up. The thing about that movie though was that it was a satire. And that's one of those weird genres where you can take something ****ed up, make fun of it, and the result ends up being ten times as ****ed up as the thing you were commenting on. But strangely, that somehow makes it LESS ****ed up than the thing that you were commenting on, because you were working in the realm of satire, where exaggeration is a valid tactic to use to make a point. Your stuff isn't meant to be taken at face value. Whereas the stuff that you were commenting on IS meant to be taken at face value, which automatically makes THAT more ****ed up than the worst thing you can do to parody it.

Chinatown, I remember, did have a pretty ****ed up ending. I don't remember that much about the movie though, and I've only seen it once a long time ago, so I think I probably should watch it again. So I guess Chinatown works, even though I've technically already seen it. I really do think I probably should watch it again.

Ahh Damn. O' well. Anyway you should definatly see chinatown again and well said about NBK. I think the best example is this scene. Its brilliant and ugh I dont know http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGIBqVwC3FM

I guess the only other films I can suggest are Salo 120 days of sodom even though I havent seen it.

Dont suppose you know any new anime movies in a style similar to Vexille/Appleseed1/2?

Or anything funny like dodgeball, get smart, hot fuzz, scary movies?

thanks

Famic0n

The Man who Knew too Little- Jon Amiel 1997

It's been a while since ive seen it but I remember liking it when it came out. I forgot about this film until you mentioned Get Smart. It's very similar in that Bill Murray is a clutz yet acts as a totally great spy (even though he is not aware he actually is one). Overrall its a fairly safe comedy meant to guarantee some laughs but its enjoyable in the same vein as a Get Smart and maybe Hot Fuzz.
