It's the ultimate question. Should I buy a Mac or PC? More specifically, should I buy a macbook or a notebook? See, I've used PCs all my life, and i'm pretty good with them. I'm going to major in Digital Media Arts (animation emphasis), and I was told Macs are great for this sort of thing. Is that true? I want to be able to really work with my computer. PCs might break once in a while, but they do what you tell them to do. You're in control. With Macs, you need to outsmart it to do what you want it to do. That is my understanding. I just want it to do what I need, and I want it to look good too. I don't need games, but I need to work with all forms of digital art and animation, and I'd like to be able to customize the look.

I have some docks (rocketdock and objectdock) installed on my pc, and I love it. The cool thing is that you can change the icon using a png file! Can you do that with macs? I want to get a desktop look that I like, and I want to make my own icons (for the dock), and I want to do this free like I did with my pc. Also, can you get two docks on the Mac?

The thing I like about windows is that when something goes wrong, there always seems to be a way to fix it. if you don't know how to, you can google it. Macs seem to give you so few things you can do, so when something does go wrong, you thtow the Mac away and buy a new one. And then there's viruses. I know that Macs don't really get viruses, but I know they can get them. Are there any virus scanners and anti-spyware programs I can get for free?

Another thing I'm wondering about is windows. No, not like the windows program, but windows that you open up. I've seen Macs, and there windows always open up small and the only wy to make it bigger is by dragging it, but it doesn't look like it can cover the whole screen. Also, will it stay like this? I don't want to drag I wondow open every time I use it.

Another thing is a sidebar. I need one. I don't want one with tons of color either. I have a google desktop sidebar, and it just has black, white, and grey stuff (the calender, clock, to do list). Again, I want my computer to have a look that I like. I don't want tons of color.

And then of course there is the internet. How is safari? How is it with wireless connection? Can you install other browsers? I need a comfortably working internet.

My last concern about Macs is memory. It looks like the only way to get decent memory is to buy a macbook pro, which is rediculously expensive. I don't need tons of memory, but I'd like to be able to have extra when I need it. Can you get hardware to give it more memory?

So, that's most of what im wondering. I know theres a lot to answer, but I'm one person you could convert to Mac! Take the opportunity. Feel free to answer any other commonly asked questions. Again, i don't need games, music, or illegal software.

Thank you in advance for anyone willing to help. I really appreciate it.

In all honesty, Macs are no better for graphic design than a PC.

For the last two years I've been using an iMac at school for design work, they were very slow to work with because their system specs are pretty low, even with new iMacs. They have a few Macbooks too, those were even worse. I ended up just doing my work at home because my PC was so much faster than the iMacs were.

I say forget about Macs, get a beefy Notebook instead.

I've heard the opposite said though. Also a guy I know who fixed computers said he got literally thousands of PCs and only 2 Macs, one of which was stepped on and the other was6 years old.

If it costs more than one grand, i won't be buying it.

i would stick with what I know, i don't have time to learn how macs work.

but i don't have any experience with which one is better.

If you get a PC with quality hardware in it and actually take good care of, it won't need to take it in to get fixed. Considering most people have PCs and know nothing about hardware or even how to take care of their PCs its not surprising he has to fix that many computers.

Easier and more enjoyable to use. Mac OS X has a much better interface and, from my experiences, is considerably faster than Windows. Also, it has better built in features than Windows, though Vista copied many of them, but not all since Leopard was recently released.

Get a PC.

A PC can run all the OSes including OS X, lookup "OS X X86 Project" for more info about that.

But like I said, Macs don't really need fixing much. If anything, I might get a mac with windows instead of a pc with OS X

Multimedia or games?

Because if you play your cards right you won't get much spyware or any viruses, unless you're just really, really, really unlucky.

Leopard or Vista? Vista for Games and Leopard for multimedia.

Again, it lies in you.

And how much are you willing to pay?

Niether does PCs, if you are good with computers you arelikely to not have any trouble with either OS.

actually Macs break down just as much as PCs

I would reccomend a PC if you plan to play any games at all and you're right, when you get an error with a PC you can look up how to fix it yourself, but when you get one with a Mac you have to call a repair man.

and then there's the fact that you can actually upgrade a PC, which you can't do on a Mac.

in short: PC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mac

Why do you keep bringing that up? All of the computers in the world don't go through that guy, and considering that there are many more PCs out there than Macs, it's pretty safe to assume that he will see more PCs than Macs.

How about this; I know some guys that only repair Macs?

They both offer something different, and PCs are only as safe as their end-user wants them to be. I haven't seen a virus for years.

Im using a macbook, i got one because im doing a degree in newsmedia and we use macs for all the work, i dont want any imcompatability problems when i do work at home. I think Macs are easier to use, ive not had a problem with it yet. I never get viruses or mal/spyware, the only problem i really have with it is that i cant play many games.

Im an animation major as well, my school uses macs in their labs but ive been told by my teachers that PCs are way better for animation, and from what they tell me they say that most studios use pcs for they can handle more because you can upgarde the graphics cards and cpu's... macs will leave you in the dark... note tho that you should get a desktop not a laptop for animation use.

Stay away from Windows. The only reason I tolerate Apple is because their OS' are based in Unix. Aside from that, they shake you down for every penny you've got on hardware and software. That being said you get some great hardware and software. If you're not afraid of actually learning how your computer works, give Linux a shot. A good version for beginners is Ubuntu. The latest release just came out in October.

[QUOTE="Arkasai7"][QUOTE="fynne"]Macs have a nice OS, but I'll never get one because they are so much more expensive than a PC. PCs are a much better price to performance ratio.SolidSnake35
Linux is 100% free and runs better than both OSX and Vista, with more eye candy on less powerful hardware.

I couldn't get said eye candy to work.

Works for me :) In most cases it's very simple. My setup took some tooling. But if you know your way around Linux, it's not that hard.
