****, I got accepted to both... I was kind of hoping that I'd be accepted to only one or the other.  Now, I have a huge decision to make that makes me really nervous and unsure.  I just don't know which one I should attend.  It's a good problem to have but now I'm really nervous about having to make this decision... what if I pick the wrong one for me?  what if I had gone to the other I would have turned out so much better?  This is really like the first major decision (at least it seems major to me) that I've ever had to make in my life.

Rich? Let's just say that both of my parents combined don't make over $40,000 a year. They actually make quite a bit less than that but I won't say how low.

Have you visited either campus yet? If you haven't I would recommend that. You can always transfer if you don't like your choice too.

What was your major again? I know you wanted to be an actuary, so that'd be mathematics and some business study... but I forgot what you changed it to. I want to say bio.

i visited w&m. i liked it a lot. you must have had really high gpa and all to get in there. whichever one you can afford 'd go for. visit, look at the classes they offer, sit in on a class and look at the dorms. if you are gonna be living there make sure you like it.

No... my parents aren't trying to drive me out to either one. lol I'm gonna have to make them drive me out there so I can compare the vibe I get from each school and then decide.

Aha. That rings a bell. I'd choose W&M given they're more of a dedicated liberal arts school, where UVA is more of a "cram-everything-in" school.

I am an actuary to pay the bills. I am getting my PhD in Poli Sci. Also, my work pays for almost all of my education, which is also a reason I work there full time. Until I become a professor, I remain an actuary. :P

Here's what I was thinking though.  I want to go to a top law school so I was perusing some top law school pages.  I found this: http://www.law.harvard.edu/admissions/jd/colleges.php

As you can see William and Mary sent 3 kids to Harvard Law... UVA sent 19.  William and Mary graduates about 1413 kids each year, while UVA graduates about 3360.  So, UVA had a better proportion of kids going to Harvard Law.  Of course, this doesn't take in to account kids who got accepted but decided not to attend... but seriously who declines Harvard Law?

this is surprising W&M is winning in the poll... granted not many people have voted. I thought UVA was the more prestigious school nationally, have I misjudged?

Well I'd assume W&M is a better academic school, but I think it would be cool to attend a pretty well-reckognized sporting school, as well.

yea that is appealing... the whole ACC sports deal. Also, kids at UVA get free admissions to all home sporting events... i'm not sure if this is the case at W&M. Do most colleges give students free admission to games?

OMG YOU'RE UVA ALUMNI!!!!! HELP ME!!!!!!

I beg of thee tell me everything I need to know WHY I should attend UVA. Here are my preconceptions about UVA and W&M, you tell me if they are ill-founded:

As for what intrigues me into W&M is the sort of mystique that it has in Virginia. It's portrayed as the place where the true intellectual type go in VA. It has nicknames like "where your best hasn't been good enough since 1693," "the bootcamp of academia," "where fun goes to die," etc. Furthermore, it's portrayed as a place where grades truly have to be earned, not just given out. It's not a degree factory like most schools, I've heard that students study all day and all night just to get C's. Also, because of this perceived toughness their is a myth that William and Mary has the highest suicide rate of any college because the workload is so difficult. The myth is not actually true...

I know this sounds odd but just something about the perceived difficulty of William and Mary is appealing to me. Not to mention that many people in Virginia actually consider W&M to be the better school no matter what the rankings say. UVA on the other hand is perceived to be a bunch of stuck up, pretentious, drunk, rich kids. They are also known to drink too much. Their unofficial mascot is the Wahoo - a fish that can drink double it's body weight - their students seem to take much pride in this with their annoying calls of "Wahooooowa." But, I think overall UVA has more prestige nationally. Also, I plan on attending law school afterwards and I think it will be easier to get into a top law school if I go to UVA. Not because of prestige but because it will probably be easier to maintain a high GPA at UVA.

But for as many faults I found in UVA I see positives as well. I like the fact that the kids have a lot of school pride (I think they overdo it sometimes though). I also really like the fact that they are in the ACC... and students get free admission to all UVA home sporting events, which is awesome. Also, I like those really stylish blue and orange scarves that the students wear at UVA. I could totally see myself wearing that scarf with a Virginia sweatshirt lol I know it's a long read but HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!

P.S. I also find the fact that UVA kids call UVA "the University" pretty neat, and that they call the campus "the ground." I also like how they say 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year, 4th year instead of fresh, soph, junior, senior. Little things like that, I find those type of things "cute."

Wow, that was quite the essay... In any case, my own [personal] take on all of that: Back in high school, I heard all the horror stories about the suicide risk at W&M too, so it must be one of those rumors that gets passed along, maybe as a source of pride ("we managed to survive W&M"). The people I know who went there are well-adjusted people, not the types who would off themselves due to stress. Don't expect UVA to be any easier anyways. I remember exams where the average scores were around 30-40 out of 100. Re: UVA has more prestige nationally. People seem to take that US News and World Report ranking stuff pretty seriously these days, don't they? Locally especially, though, I think W&M is pretty competitive with UVA as far as prestige, including Law. Re: UVA and stuck up rich kids + partying. Depends completely on the school within UVA. For the College of Arts and Science, that stereotype is almost completely true.

That would be something to consider then. It's extremely pervasive in the College. I was in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, so I didn't have to deal with it except in a few elective classes and in my first couple of years when I had some roommates in the College. There's very high pressure to conform, especially in terms of clothes and brands (North Face, New Balance, Nalgene, etc).

wow you must be pretty smart and pretty rich, both are very good mang-unit248

Both of them are state schools so tuition is fixed and pretty cheap if he's a resident of Virginia.

TheOT_King  - Go to both schools and see which one you liked. Both UVA and W&M are good schools. W&M might be a litte more prestigious, but there really won't be much of a difference if you get good grades and dow well on the LSAT.

UVA kids are kind of preppy though. Just how they are. But they have much more school pride, especially in athletics. Charlottesville is kind of a dull place though. My parents live around there and, frankly, its just . . . meh.

W&M is old. That works both ways. While its great environment (being around Colonial Williamsburg and all) alot of the buildings are old. Also, I was underwhelmed by the dorms. They seemed rather small and sparse (though to be honest, the best dorm rooms are at CNU).

Both are really good schools, but you need to visit them to see if you want to go there.

Thanks I appreciate the insight. It seems you've gone through this whole college search and selection in Virginia. Any other tips you can offer me? Also, Christopher Newport has the best dorms? WTF lol... oooooh, i know something that concerns me. do both uva and w&m have residential bathrooms or private bathrooms? I know VA Tech has the residential bathrooms where you're basically taking a shower with 80 other people... nasty. Does UVA or W&M have private ones?

I can't speak for W&M obviously, but at UVA, the types of bathrooms you get depends on which dorm you pick. Some of the dorms are residence halls and have the "communal" bathroom that you have to share with the entire floor. Some of the dorms are suites where it's more like an apartment -- you share the bathroom with the six or so other people in your suite. Not surprisingly, the residence hall type of dorms are cheaper to live in...

lol so I see. You know the UVA kids seem to really bash your school lol... Like at my high school the kids who got accepted to UVA early just bash the kids who are going to VA Tech all day... they make jokes like "what's the one thing that a UVA student and a Tech student have in common? They both got into Tech."

You'll hear another one if you do decide to come to UVA ;). We had a little taunt for the Techies whenever our football team lost to Tech (which admittedly happens pretty often...). Went a little something like "it's alright, it's ok, you'll be working for us one day" ...

that's based on the song that went "it's ok, it's alright, you never loved me anyway..." what was the name of that song... not the UVA song but the real one, i'm trying to find it now lol

[QUOTE="g-unit248"]wow you must be pretty smart and pretty rich, both are very good manTheOT_King

I know VA Tech has the residential bathrooms where you're basically taking a shower with 80 other people... nasty. Does UVA or W&M have private ones?

w&m has some communal bathrooms, but the dorms i stayed in were really tiny. so it was sharing the bathroom with like ten/twenty other people. but the stalls were all enclosed. no clue aboout uva.

To be honest, I could care less.  I only went to VT for one year, and didn't really know many people from either college.  All I know is, my roommate that year prided himself on pissing on their stadium.  And that visitors from UVA tended to be fratboyish, and I hate fratboys.  So that's really all I had to go on.  I'm sure most of the students there are lovely people who might even be able to drink as much as we did.

Well...

I wouldn't ask a bunch of random people in the interweb that don't know what you want to do or what you like for advice as big as college...

but i choose W+M because i would rather go to a smaller school...

UPDATE:  I think me and my friend are going to go visit UVA this coming Thursday.  I still need to figure out a way to visit W&M.
