corner it, trap it, and pray that a gun falls from the ceiling. otherwise, trap it somewhere and... ask someone nearby for advice? and probably calling animal control can do some good, but perhaps opening the door and chasing it out could work...
How about bug spray? I don't think it'll kill it but it might blind it! Or you can just use a hammer or something and squash it.....OR get a really big mouse trap!

Umm... a rodent trap, or stomp on it if you are fast enough and using shoes, if there is no other animals in the house you can always poison some food... google search "How to kill a rat" and you should get alot of suggestions:)
On a serious note, you could use a tube of a nontoxic glue that's made for traping vermins and the like, put it on a piece of wood with some meat or candy and make sure it doesn't move, put it somewhere around were you know it has to pass, and over night you'll get your rat. When you trap it I'd suggest placing in a big enough ziplock bag and slowly fill it with water so it covers the vermin in question and watch it drown, it delivers a macabre sense of satisfaction and joy.
Arm yourself with some sort of blunt object and then run into your kitchen and start yelling and thrashing about. Remember, it's more scared of you than you are of it.
