...they expect me to understand that?

I have recently taken up Japanese at my school (thus I'm not that great at it) and for some reason a cute japanese exchange student wrote in my book expecting me to understand what she wrote. Apparently she wrote some nice things in there but no one is willing to tell me what it says.

Has this happened to anyone or is my life just strange?

Oh and if you know japanese can you decipher it for me...I'll post the notes when I get my book back.

I don't know Japanese but im sure if you take a picture and post it someone will help you. You better hope its something good though .:PKittenNipples

When I order from the chinese takeaway they write in chisese while they take the order.

Well, it's not that easy. You can't look it up if you don't know the characters :P

Even if he knew the the readings, first-year Japanese courses don't typically cover how to use Japanese input on a computer, though that really isn't a very a difficult thing to learn on your own.

More than that, though, translation programs typically do a really poor job with Japanese grammar structures, being a language that relies heavily on things that are understood through context (especially with plain speech.) Take the ｢いいかみだね｣ phrase for example..a translation program wouldn't know whether to read ｢かみ｣ ("kami") as "hair", "god", or "paper" since no kanji is used. I just tried it in Babelfish, and it doesn't even pick one of those..rather, it for some reason chooses the pre-masu form of "to bite" ("kami"; the root being "kamu") so it ends up returning a "translation" that isn't even remotely correct.

My language skills aren't much beyond first-year Japanese, but I know basic grammar structures and a handful of vocab/kanji. I don't know about "teaching" ..but feel free to PM me if you have any questions on first-year stuff.
