These are the things:

  • Super Stupid yahoo answer questions.
  • Gulliable idiots who post chainmail on youtube and facebook thinking they will be kissed or their parents may die.
  • 12 year olds who swear online.
  • People who think they can bully people because of their work status.
  • Attention seekers.

And many other things :P.

What about you guys?

this definition off?

Altruism or selflessness is the principle or practice of concern for the welfare of others. It is a traditional virtue in many cultures and a core aspect of various religious traditions, though the concept of "others" toward whom concern should be directed can vary among cultures and religions. Altruism or selflessness is the opposite of selfishness.

-The Jersey Shore craze.

-People who have an obsession with "getting laid".  There are more important things in life.

-The fact that nudity and words are considered more offensive in our society than violence.

-The rate at which obesity is overtaking the United States.

-Virtually anyone I've stumbled across under the age of 20.  The future of our country is bleak if you ask me.

If you accept the principle that altruism is a virtue, then you accept the principle that you don't have a right to your life and the only justification for your existence is to indiscriminately serve others. I find that to be disgusting. Altruism is the morality of death. It vaunts slavery and condemns self-esteem. I am a man of self esteem. My life is inherently valuable, and I have a right to it.

1. The libertarian party is the only major political party in the US with a platform that is rational, consistent, and moral. It is the only party platform that recognizes human rights. 2. Welfare is funded by stolen money. If you live off of stolen money then you are mooching. 3. Elijah Wood is one of the greatest actors and artists of his generation. 4. Bulbasaur is undoubtedly the best first generation starter. He has a type advantage against the first 3 gyms, and the last one. 5. Ayn Rand is one of the greatest people who have ever lived. She was a genius and a true individual.

only time i ever said that phrase was watching a 2 year old girl little Yueyue get run over twice by a car, with 18 passer-by's not doing anything as this girl is just lying there crushed. Finally it took someone to pay attention, the local garbage lady.

That's seriously fvcked up.

That makes me say "lose faith in humanity" a lot more then jerkwads/morons on Yahoo comments and petulent children screaming epithets over Xbox Live.

Something so plainly obviously wrong, a small child dying in the middle of the street, and no one does anything...

What is this, a fad? I'm sick and tired of hearing people say "I just lost my faith in humanity" or something like that. Humanity is filled with great people and awful people and that's how it's been since the dawn of time so stop focusing on the worst.

Slow down there Richard Rahl, altruism as a virtue is different from forced "altruism" or requiring a certain level of "giving". Just because I find it morally positive to give to others or help others at my own expense does not mean that I don't find my life to be worth living in and of itself, or just as valuable as anyone else's.

The fact that the hatred of minorities is still alive and well today, the fact that we still have a society that has a socially harmful attitude towards sexual violence, and the fact that society still has contempt for sensitivity, autonomy, vulnerability, and dependency.

Nothing. 'Faith in humanity' is a silly concept.Blood-Scribe
I hate the phrase as well. But judging by how the phrase is used, I guess what it really means is "faith in the progression of humanity" or something similar. And so asking about what makes you lose your faith in humanity is really just the same as asking about what makes you think humanity is failing to progress, which doesn't seem as silly (at least in my view). And by "progress," I'm referring to a progression to a peaceful world because I think that's the subtext here.

I don't see the point in having faith in humanity in the first place. There will always be good people and terrible people. Using terrible people to generalize the entire human race is just foolish.

I think a big reason why it irks me is because of how people to tend gauge their level of faith in humanity on the basis of small things that are unrepresentative of humanity as a whole and are usually limited to the scope of a specific culture or group. Kinda like when someone posts a news article about the WBC picketing a funeral or whatever the hell (just look at some of the stuff posted in this thread), and then people sperg on about how this is somehow enough to convince them that humanity is doomed. It strikes me as an odd metric of assessing our progress as a whole.

So I guess in some sense I'm a little biased on the subject because of how the phrase has been abused.

Not really, Slavery is being forced to do something by someone else. If people choose to help others before themselves then thats there choice and not slavery in anyway.
