I want to buy a guitar which is of less cost, preferably a Fender stratocaster or Ibanez.

I know this - the strings should be close to the fingerboard

What else would you think is important?

Note: I play for my band and we play Alt. Rock, not too many soloes like metal.

Reliability (can take a pounding and not break, doesn't go out of tune easily).

Fret buzzing , Can it stay in tune, how the the neck/body feel make sure its legit as well and not some fake rip off guitar. preety much check all working parts, then plug it in and see how it feels.

Go with the Ibanez. The Squier-Fender (no way you're getting a real Fender for a cheap price) will give you a more appropriate Alt. Rock sound, but the strings are far from the fretboard and the quality of the guitar is utter garbage. I know because I have one, and it's the reason I've switched to bass.

A lot of the problem is with the tuning knobs as well. The guitar de-tunes very easily so unless you do some self-maintenance and replace the knobs it'll be quite irritating to play for awhile. Another thing to look at is the quality of the pickups on your guitar as they're obviously extremely important.

you can get a Mexican Fender for about $450, however, they may or may not sound good, so just go to a guitar store and try them out.

Well a strat is pretty expensive-- you're talking about $700 for a Mexican strat, and $1100 for an American strat But I would go to every store in your city and get advice from every guitar salesman you can find. Remember to get a decent amp. You should spend at LEAST as much on your amp as you do on your guitar. As a general rule, the amp affects your sound more than your guitar does. That being said, you don't need to worry too much about getting a good amp, just don't cheap out on it. Because in a year from now when you're better at guitar you're going to kick yourself if you got a really super-cheap amp.

DO NOT buy a cheap guitar with a tremolo- buy a fixed-bridge axe. The low action (closeness to frets) you speak of, you should be wary of, as cheap guitars produce bad vibrations and have poor intonation, no matter how hard you try to set them up.

I think he means a Squier-Fender Strat, since those are like the cheaply made Stratocaster ripoffs that would probably be within his price range (they're like $100-250). One of these things (TC can correct me if I'm wrong; it'd be pretty awesome to find a cheap Fender even if I don't like the sound):

Since you guys seem guitar savvy, is the ]Ibanez RG5EX1 a good under $500 guitar? I have my eyes on one but never had the chance (and won't in the near future) to try it.

it's pretty good, but the trem will give you problems, you should get a guitar with a fixed bridge since it would be much easier to tune and change strings.

Unless it's a Prestige model, most Ibanez guitars are made in Korea. Which doesn't equate to the best build quality, but in the end it depends on the specific guitar. The parts themselves seem to be of high quality (Edge III trem, basswood body), which means that with a pickup upgrade it'll sing beautifully if you want to do that down the road.

yeah, but I think it's worthwhile avoiding trems until you have sufficient funds to buy a higher end guitar, however, if you really want it, then buy it, but have an experienced guitarist set it up for you.

Pretty much this. My friend has a similar Ibanez model and tuning it is a serious pain. We went to my other friend's house for a writing session and he literally spent the whole time tuning his guitar into C# (kind of a strange tuning, but I use Drop C# on bass so everyone decided to stick with something similar). Fixed bridges are much easier to work with when it comes to tuning.

I've heard ibanez guitars have the lowest action in the lower price range

you can generally adjust the action on any guitar, but Ibanez have thin necks which facilitate faster playing, and they normally come with a low action.

A tremolo is not a necessity for me coz I dont do much metal, probably alterbridge at the most. But I love to bend using extra light strings.

And quick tuning is improtant here so fixed bridges are ideal right?

Yea i think he means those as well.

If you wan't a better quality guitar for a very low price range, the pawn shops and other used music warhouse stores have excellent deals.

Look at this freakin amazing guitar

Only 60 bucks at a pwn shop. Its not int he best condition but its great starting off, and people forget that a lot of the guitar add on's and effects can be modded.

Yeah I like factory adjusted action. I've screwed up 2 guitars trying to modify the action.

One more question if i use good quality extra light strings on a low action ibanez, will it rattle?

I couldn't find it in in the nearest stores, but I'll search more.

What other model could be similar to this one?
