Like writing fantasy books. What would be a good major for that? I was thinking creative writing.

There are schools with really good writing programs, even online, like UCLA. You might try those.

Here's a link to their newest catalog.

It's not something that you really go to school for. Either you're good at creative writing or you're not. It's a lot like painting in that respect. It's also not a very good career goal. Very, very, very few writers can live off what they make and you're considered to be doing extremely well if you can bring in $50k or more a year. Writing books is something that you should do as a hobby, not a career.

yes, that's why people pursuing writing as a career shouldn't go with writing novels, but rather with screenwriting, etc. But those are very competitive.

Screenwriting is just as terrible. Sure, you get paid more...if you can actually find a job in the first place. It also doesn't help that in a lot of cases its the director or producer who does all of the writing.

There are plenty of writers that make a living writing, and being a writer is no tougher than any other profession out there. The profession is only as tough as you make it.

Fantasy, especially adult fantasy, is hard to sell. It's even harder getting a literary agent who will represent you. It also depends on what kind of fantasy novel it is, how long the whole novel is, etc. The longer it is (120k+) the harder it is for you to sell to a literary agent and a publisher, let alone sell in bookstores. You can get a degree in writing and all, but that's not going to get your foot in the door to a literary agent or a major publisher. It helps writing wise, sure, but that doesn't mean it's going to make it a best seller list. Doesn't hurt to try though. :)
