Most XP programs work with it, and all the ones you listed work. It's not as bad as some people make it seem. SP1 should be coming out for it soon also. If you game on your computer a lot, I would wait a little, though.
Also, be sure to get at least 2 gigs of RAM if you do decide on Vista.
I'm running Vista Business on my laptop and it seems fine. I just download and install the Windows updates whenever they're available. Steam is working (my friends installed it and played CS:S), Windows Live Messenger is working (obviously), Firefox is working as well.
My laptop has 1.5 GBs of ram, and on idle...37%-42% of my memory is occupied. If you want to play games, I recommend getting 2 GBs of ram.
Reason? I don't trust random people on the internet. :|[QUOTE="ThaStig"][QUOTE="RamboSymbiot"]stick with xp pro for now...trust mergsniper1
;) Then why ask on a public forum?
For opinion. But he told me to stick with XP Pro, then didn't give me a reason for it. Just to...trust him. What about running Halo 2? Does my computer need to be hella pro to run Halo 2?ThaStig
Well my friend's laptop (Asus G1, not Asus G1S) with Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0Ghz), 2gb of DDR2 667Mhz ram, and Geforce 700 Go video card can run it perfectly...
[QUOTE="Elraptor"]I have the business edition on my laptop. So far, I don't really see any advantages over XP professional. ThaStigBut say if I'm going to get a new computer anyways, should I just get Vista for the hell of it?Yeah, I guess, but note what others have said about the memory drain. You need at least one gig just for everyday browsing and word processing. Personally, I would have gotten two if I had known how much it takes to run this OS.
Noooo, Vista has even more annoying what I like to call "idiot messages" and does even more heinous antipiracy stuff sometimes when you make even the simplest of hardware changes, or so I have read.
Stick with XP. Better yet, just keep your XP installation for Windows games and be an early adopter and switch to the surprisingly user friendly Ubuntu...
Linux is the future of desktops, and Microsoft's seemingly oddball partnerships lately with various Linux providers seem to suggest that even they realize this...
So I'm thinking of purchasing a new computer today and I think I am going to get one that runs on Windows Vista. The problem is I've heard about problems/bugs that Vista has. Maybe my friends are just talking out of their ass on this one but is there any problems I might encounter, like running XP programs on Vista? for example Steam/AIM/MSN/Firefox and other things?ThaStig
Steam/AIM/MSN/Firefox work great for me. :D

What idiot messages are you talking about? I think you're talking about the security messages that ask for admin priv. Those are obviously there for a reason.
If you don't have a cracked version or illegal copy of Vista, you have nothing to worry about. Assuming that it is true, XP had the same issues. It would sometimes randomly ask you to reactivate it after switching out a few minor components. If you do get that pormpt, it only takes a minute or so to reactivate it.
You can get XP if you want.. but you will probably end up upgrading soon anyway; you might as well get Vista now. There's very little wrong with it. It's a decent OS, very few bugs and most of the problems are coming from "weak" drivers.
I totally agree with you, right now Im using Ubuntu Feisty and I am never going to Windows again.....it is just easier and less stressfulNoooo, Vista has even more annoying what I like to call "idiot messages" and does even more heinous antipiracy stuff sometimes when you make even the simplest of hardware changes, or so I have read.

I just got my new laptop.. I have Vista running on it.
Up to date all my program are running fine... the only downside would be playing or running older applications.
You should also know that Vista is taking up a lot of RAM.. Get at least 1.5gb if you wanna play games. Vista will take 51 and you will still have 1gb for other things.

Oh, I already have XP. I've had it for a long time (at least in terms of software lifespan). I just see no compelling reason to upgrade to Vista. At any rate, I am using Ubuntu right now. I mostly only use XP for gaming (which I hardly do on the computer lately anyway).

Oops. that was directed at the TC. Sorry, I didn't specify that.

Kind of surprising, isn't it? Using hard drives formatted with Microsoft's NTFS takes a little bit of digging around to figure out, but it's nothing too difficult. Other than that, it's been about as user friendly as I can imagine an OS being.
i have vista home premium and i havent had any real problems with it. Its just REALLY annoying when i have a "please approve" screen for every little change i make on it. I wish i knew how 2 turn it off.cowboys89
It's called User Account Control (UAC), click the Vista Orb, go to Control Panel, at the top right search box, search for "user account control". Then you'll see a link under "User Accounts" that says "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off" and just go from there.
Want the truth well youl need a computer with a processor bigger then 2.0 and a medium size cache just to have it running smoothly, and also youl need at least 1G of ram to have crap running at a medium pace ...
with xp you only need 512 minimum and a 1.6 processor..........
vista takes up automaticaly 512 of your memory just to run windows vista..
xp only takes 128 of ram to run ...and it doesn't even use the full amount of that ram.......
all depends on what you do with your comp if your a gamer screw vista get xp
if your a media person with a huge data base of songs movies ect get vista ..........
if you have a crap computer dont get vista it will only make it worse..... and i think vista takes up 8 G of space on your HD..im not too sure....but it does need special drivers which accualy takes away things you were able to do with xp but its bigger then the drivers for xp ......
dunno where they came up with that math....

My ntfs partition was automatically mounted when I upgraded to Feisty. Didn't have to dig around.

But perhaps Linux isn't for him? If he intends to sue it for gaming, he's better off with windows due to games being more compatible.[QUOTE="nizms"][QUOTE="Bizzy-B"]what some other people have said: get linux!

Well okay, I'll make an exception there. My ntfs partition was automatically mounted when I upgraded to Feisty. Didn't have to dig around.
