. . .And if the world were how Senator McCain and General Amos painted, that's exactly what the headlines would be saying.

As it is, not a single soldier has yet to resign or cause a problem over the repeal.

Remember what the most outspoken defendents of the law said? No? They even gave an estimation: somewhere between 265,000 and 528,000 military personnel will throw down their guns and leave in a huff, utterly crippling the military and thereby putting America and, by extension, the entire world at grave risk, ushering in a new and unprecedented age of Islamic Sharia law imposed upon American women and children forced to worship Osama and eat couscuous.

But now, General Amos says that somewhere someday there might maybe be a problem sort of potentially kinda.

Ladies and gentleman, let's please cite this example the next time some politician or military officer or religious zealot tries to feed us more of that same old "The world will end if gays are permitted to…" nonsense. I mean, just how many times is this same excuse going to be taken seriously?

Discuss.

You do know you can't resign from the military like a normal job right?

Also refusing to follow orders can end you in jail or shot. Not kidding about the 2nd part either.

Sure, but apparently nobody else knew it, because people were convinced soldiers would be resigning or at least doing something to get kicked out.

Most of the boys I know don't really care. A brother in arms is a brother. Sure, you get the **** who just can't get over himself, and that becomes hell for the guys over in logistics, but it's not as common as thought. Way to throw it on the high brass and religious folk. It's got little substance. If you have not BTDT, stay the hell out of it. It just pisses off everyone inside who it actually affects.

You wouldn't believe the arguements some folks were making against DADT repeal...and yes. "resignation" was one of them... just goes to show how stupid they think the people they represent are.

Wrong. I got out a couple months ago ago because of this DADT business.

:o

No, I'm kidding. :P I think a mass exodus of troops was a pretty stupid prediction in the first place. First off, soldiers (e.g., enlisted men) can't resign. They have a contract, and if they decide they don't like being the military due to gays (or whatever), their only other option is prison. Officers can resign, usually. Officers resign all the time, usually because they some civilian outfit is willing to pay them way, way more money to do the same thing they were doing in the military.

And Republican Senators, and General Amos himself. Did you even read what I posted? They tried to argue that soldiers would leave the army in a "mass exodus" (actual term used) if gays were allowed in. THEIR WORDS, not mine. And even if they were a minority, they were a very influential minority, being lawmakers and generals of the marines and all.

I can't imagine why anyone, with any military expericence, would make that prediction.

There is not going to be a mass exodus from the military because of this. These predictions are outlandish, and seem to be made by very politically motivated individuals. I find it very difficult to believe that people willing to sacrifice their lives for their country would leave at the drop of a hat because homosexuals are allowed to serve.

the whole concept is just silly anyway.

anyone that is a student of history knows that gays have been the greatest warriors the world has ever seen.

the spartans, the greeks, alexander the great, hadrian, the entire british royal navy ... the list goes on and on.

ok i was just ribbing the royal navy but still if there was any sense in the world they would be activiely recruiting gays not making a flap over it.

Funny. All my years in the military and in every unit I've been in, it's well known who the gay members are and no one really cares either way. It may be mentioned in passing but I've never even come across anyone who was ever bothered by it. It's all about knowing that Soldier will have your back when the bad times go down.

What's there to discuss? Oh, that's the right, it'll be the same as the next topic about gays you make. And all the ones before that: "Yay, gay rights have cometh! Lets rub it in everyone's faces!"

I think you are trying to make some kind of self-indulgent victory out of this. Totally immature. The point of DADT is to shatter a barrier (though it was never really there in the first place). You are kind of defeating the purpose, and looking smug whilst doing so.

I think that there was a misunderstanding somewhere in there about troops leaving. I doubt senior officers as well as a senator who retired from the military and was a POW would be unaware enlisted troops can't just resign. What they were saying was that a lot of troops would simply refuse to reenlist, or extend their contracts at the end of their current enlistment. Your average person signs a contract to serve between three and six years and if they want to stay in past their current contract they can volunteer to stay in longer. That's how you get people staying in 20 years or longer. Officers are a little different, they can usually resign their commission after their mandatory service obligation is finished.

Anyway, there are always going to be people who are against homosexuals being allowed to serve openly. You're much more likely to see hostility in an all-male unit like infantry than in a coed unit like transportaion or finance. But that doesn't mean people will want to leave in droves. Right now the economy still sucks and the military is one of the most secure jobs you can get. It's one of the few jobs that didn't receive a paycut. Granted, our payraise for this year was one of the smallest percentage-wise since the 60s but we still got a raise. In terms of people who still want to get out, the military is already downsizing because of the economy. They probably won't get too much trouble with wanting to get out and depending on their performance they may not have a choice.

That's because the people spouting off that trash had no idea what soldiers can or can't actually do, and were not experts in said field.
