need suggestions regarding any recent thrash metal songs that are melodious and heavy at the same time... as an example, the beginning of hangar 18 had a very nice melody and fits this description, but not a song like orion, which is melodious but not heavy. so any such recent songs youve heard? (washington is next, and the only by static x are some that i know)

Since you directly referenced "Hangar 18," there's a sequel ("Return to Hangar") on The World Needs A Hero.

I'll also throw in anything by Shadows Fall (especially "Idle Hands" and "The Light That Blinds"), "Terror Train" from Demons & Wizards, "Ten Thosand Strong" by Iced Earth (actually, most of IE's catalog fits your criteria ;) ), "I'm Alive" by Helloween, and "Majesty" by Blind Guardian.

That's just for starters. :D

Just because of those kind of names, I'll say throw in "Five Magics" by Megadeth too.

no no i am not interested in any particular band. you have listened to hangar 18- it had a really good melody(i keep on repeating this because it matters the most to me), i want THAT KIND of song- regardless of band. although i admit that megadeth's style of guitar playing is most suited for catchy melodies...

Well I dunno, I'm not really a metal aficionado as such, thrash metal is where I stay at... though if I were to swim out of that genre, I'd recommend Cemetary Gates and Cowboys From Hell by Pantera...If you want fast, then go with Angel of Death by Slayer... Raining Blood, Seasons In The Abyss all by Slayer... Revolution Is My Name, Drag The Waters by Pantera again... see what you think of those.

angel of death, one of the few songs without melody that i really like. but its riffs at one point become unbearable. as for the others, i will try some of them... thanks for the help.

Absolutely, especially on "The Light That Blinds." The opening riff actually rivals "Hangar 18" in many ways.

I'm not really sure. I know they've had some problems with record labels, but "The War Within" sold well, and a few of the songs got a lot of airplay around my area (though part of that could be that the drummer is local).

pretty much everything off of Lamb of God's new album, especially the song "curse" the album overall is a bit of a letdown if you're a big LoG fan, but it's pretty mainstream and I think it will help newcomers to the genre get into that particular style of music.

For melodic stuff, check out anything from Annihilator's first two albums, especially the tracks "Never, Neverland" and "Alice in Hell".

If you want heavy and melodic I got some good stuff for you:

All That Remains-Two Weeks (Check out thier last two albums as they have alot of melody in them)

Killswitch Engage-The End of Heartache (Howard Jones is an INCREDIBLE singer and brings gret melody into their music)

Nightrage-Spiral (Heavier than the other stuff but still awesome and has a bit of melody)

Bullet For My Valentine-Waking the Demon (Just a cool song)

And for one a bit more hardcore than the others but still fits the criteria:

Opeth-Ghost of Perdition (One of my fav bands. They can be an acquired taste however)

my elder brother is also a fan of opeth. but some of their songs are heavy, while other cannot even remotely be called metal. this variation puts me off, unfortunately.

I remember the heaviness of some of their stuff put me off at first but then I forced myself to sit there and listen to Ghost of Perdition one day and he started singing and I got blown away. Ended up going out and buying 2 of their albums and never looked back.

Personally, the variation is one of the things I like the most about them but as I said I feel the band is very much an aquired taste.

You would probably like In Flames, they're melodic and heavy.
