So, I'm a bit stuck in a situation. I just received my driver's license a little over a week ago. Problem is, I have no money for gas or insurance. I've called a large list of stores, 24 if I remember right, and none were hiring (minus one which I filled an application for), but many said they were accepting applications. From your guys experience, what does it take to get a job, specifically in these times? Is there any near fool-proof ways to getting a job?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

You can't really do much until you get an interview. Then, you have to do everything you can to present yourself as someone who they can rely on. Experience is not important for entry-level work. The most important thing to the employer is that you're going to show up, every day, on time and sober.

Dress well, look good. Have a good personality. Be confident about the job. Smile and be happy.

Pound the pavement, just go to every store/restaurant and ask to speak to the manager if they are hiring. If they are not hiring, ask if you can complete an application and for them to keep you in mind if there are any openings in the future. Sometimes you can get lucky and get hired even if they are not "hiring".

Drop off applications to as many places as possible. If you get an interview just be yourself; don't act repulsive on either end of the scale.

Food service jobs are usually fairly easy to get. Bad pay, bad hours, and the work is kind of boring, but the co-workers are usually a lot of fun. See if you can find a job as a waiter somewhere.

Just keep applying to a lot of places. At the end of the day, we are in a recession and this type of work is obviously highly sought after. Best of luck

Bad pay and bad hours are better than no hours and no pay. You can't afford to be picky when the unemployment rate is 10%.

i was so desperate for a job at the start of 2009, that i applied to McDonalds, they gave me the job then and there. i lasted 6 months there and then quit, i would rather be homeless than work in that **** hole of a place. Customers were scum, pay was way below min wage, bosses were to power mad. The only thing i liked was the fellow co-workers (all of which have followed me and quit).

If you really need cash then fast food are always hiring (thats in the UK mind you, but shouldnt be that much different in the US)
