abc news

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Early 2012 suddenly is shaping up as a major launch pad for ****c blockbusters bowing in 3D.

Hollywood studios Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment are mulling the 3D re-release of James Cameron's "Titanic" in April of that year.

That could put "Titanic" in theaters mere weeks after the 3D reissue of George Lucas' "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace" from Fox and Lucasfilm.

Plans were announced this week to send out the first in a planned series of "Star Wars" re-releases sometime between February and April of 2012.

April 15, 2012, marks the 100th anniversary of Titanic slipping into the icy Atlantic, and Paramount marks its own centennial the same month. But it's possible that "Titanic" could be released as early as that year's oft-lucrative Valentine's Day weekend.

So with "Phantom Menace" awaiting final slotting, there's a chance Cameron and Lucas could arm-wrestle over the hearts-and-flowers frame.

Lightstorm has completed tests of extended footage from "Titanic," the second-highest-grossing film in history behind Cameron's "Avatar." But no shop has been awarded work on the project.

"It's a time-consuming process, and we want to do it right," "Titanic" producer Jon Landau told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday. "Converting a movie is not a technical process; it's a creative process that has technology behind it."

He continued: "There were eight or nine companies used on the test, so we could compare. So far, there's only a group that went to the head of the ****"

The conversion work is expected to cost $10 million-$15 million. Among the sequences that impressed most were scenes showing passengers boarding the ocean liner.

"Phantom Menace" and "Titanic" are likely to get distribution in as many 3D locations as can be secured, likely somewhere in the range of 2,000-2,500 theaters.

When I first saw Titanic, I was (...does some math...)...14. Both my father and I have an interest in the source material, so we went to see it. So yeah, I got to see Kate Winslets **** while sitting next to my dad.

Can I say **** on here? :: Preview :: Oh, nice I can't say "****." What, does some Sunday school teacher make the rules around here?

Okay, replace the "****" above with "booooooooooooooooobies."

Wow Hollywood really is out of ideas. First they remake everything, and when they start to run out of old material, they just re-release it. ****ing brilliant...

Like the Star Wars movies, they weren't built with 3D in mind, so...

I never will understand the need for some directors to go back and re-do their old movies. Spielberg did it with E.T., Lucas done it with the Star Wars films so many time we've lost count, now Cameron feels Titanic needs this treatment. They were fine the first time around, why fix what isn't broken?

Money, obviously. But still, just leave well enough alone.

Titanic isn't even a 3D kind of movie. Star Wars at least has enough stuff that would be enhanced in 3D to possibly not suck.

To get a proper 3D effect they indeed need to shoot using 3D cameras. Any film re-released in '3D' will inevitably disappoint in terms of just how 3D it really is.

That's the funny part. James Cameron has always talked about how a 3-D movie should be shot in 3-D to begin with- not converted later, which is pretty much what they're going to do with Titanic I imagine...

What about animated films? I think they already have the 3D data during animation, right?

good idea: lets re-release a long, 2nd viewing boring, movie in a gimmicky format at a time when people will be bored with it.

The 3D gimmick doesn't appeal to me that much.

I saw Toy Story 3 in 3D which was a great movie, but would have been better if I wasn't wearing those glasses.

lol titanic in 3d? What about this movie makes it a good idea to make it in 3d?? Action scenes? nope..Huge special effects? Nope. Is the movie even directed and edited to make use of 3d images, therefore giving the audiences something neat to look at in 3d? Nope..so why the heck are they doing it?

Please, for the love of god, stop with the 3D remakes. On another note, Titanic 2 was on some dodgy channel the other day. How do you make a sequel to Titanic?

And 3D has now jumped the shark.

I MUCH prefer 2D. And Titanic is a drama. Why the hell would you put 3D in a romance/drama chick flick?

I agree. Titanic was a romance movie. Other than the last 15 minutes of the film, there are no cinematic action scenes in the movie whatsoever.

Unrelated to your actual post, but it did make me think that 2012 (the movie) could actually be enhanced for the better in 3D.

Why Titanic? What, we get to watch people talk on a big ship until it sinks in the last bit of the movie in 3D? They could have seriously found a more fitting movie to re-release.

And they really need to stop with planning re-releases, damn. It's just absolutely lazy on their end, and the movies weren't shot in 3D to begin with, so they're gonna look terrible by the usual standards.

You make it sound like there's three people sitting around a table somewhere deciding what movies get made and re-released. Cameron is just cashing in after the Avatar success, despite his previous criticisms of 3D movies not filmed in 3D.

But it could be worse, much much much worse.

We've entered an era of cultural stagnation. Let's re-release avatar 3d as avatar 3d with special features and cinemas chairs that rumble.
