See, I agree, that is exactly where they went wrong. If unions were part of the subscription, more people would probably pay. Not that many, but there wouldn't be as many dead unions today.

That is so not true my young alt grasshopper I've seen some total access be banned more than free members, if not try it yourself, pay and then troll to see if you'll not get moderated
Only have to pay for one month. You can cancel your subscription and keep your color. And sure 3 bucks could buy someone lunch.. but I highly doubt anyone here is so strapped for cash that they desperately need that lunch money.
