I'm having a problem with Vista. I'm probably overlooking something very obvious here, but ever since I've installed Vista it always asks me permission to do anything. Copy, paste, download, etc. Almost everything I do brings up a window asking if it's O.K.

"Do you want to allow web page access to the clipboard?"

"Windows needs permission to continue."

And on and on.....a small window pops up and I always get asked for permission when I wish to do anything, even though under user accounts I'm labeled the administrator. I have searched for every possible way to disable this unnecessary baby sitting, yet it's still acting like it's under parental controls. Can someone direct me to something I missed to disable this? There has to be a way to turn it off....but having searched thoroughly in the control panel I have yet to find it.

Screw it I've been wandering around all kinds of forms looking around for computer stuff. I just went to Google. I found this link after searching "Vista administrator off." Seams to be what you're looking for. (UAC = User Account Control and is what you're talking about.)

Yeah. Just go to the User Account control menu. And there should be a checkbox checked off that does the Permissions Pop Up thing. Uncheck it and you're good to go

I hate this piece of **** sewage infested garbage named Vista. Thanks for the link, but it doesn't work. I've tried all the methods. It can't find secpol.msc, but I did get the first step done through method B. Step 2 I can't even past #1, it won't let me. I can change the bullet points, but no box appears.

****in' thing. I'd buy XP if it wasn't $199. I hate this trash. Why the hell did they put something so ridiculous and so hard to disable? Simply incredible.

Thanks for your help though man, I really appreciate it :). Now excuse me while I go firebomb MS headquarters.

Just open the control panel and type in UAC into the search bar. The first thing that shows up should have a place to turn off or on the User Account Control.

This is a feature that has been used in a lot of other operating systems. Apple and some distributions of Linux have been using this for awhile. Mainly so you don't accidently do something that could harm your system. I don't see it as that big of a deal. Vista isn't that bad.

UAC is terrible. I downloaded a program that keeps it running, but turns off the annoying messgaes. I believe it's called Tweak UAC.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I recently got a Vista laptop, and I don't know how to make it so firefox saves downloads to my desktop. When I tell it to save to "Desktop" it saves to a folder name that, and I don't see an option to save directly to my actual desktop.

Did you try going to Tools->Options and making sure "Save files to" is set to desktop?

Can you post a pic of the save screen you get so we know what you're talking about?

And you're selecting the desktop thing at the top of that little list that pops up when you hit browse?

Click browse and make sure that Desktop is selected (the thing at the very top).

Make sure the desktop folder is the one under your user account, and not the public one.

I found UAC pretty annoying too so I turned it off

here is how you do it...go to the start menu> hit control panel > user accounts and family safety > user accounts > turn user control on or off > uncheck the box > hit ok

you will have to restart your pc afterwards

turning off the UAC will make a little icon pop up in your toolbar tell you that you have it off, to get rid of this go to control panel> security > security center > click the thing that says "change how security center alerts me" on the left side in the green part > hit don't notify me and don't display the icon

or you could just set it to always hide (right click toolbar, properties, notification area, customize, change the security center thing to hide)

personally I like Vista better than XP

Go in the Name folder, which is your user folder, and there should be another desktop folder in there. Select that one, and it should do it.

Thanks! It worked, I assumed that since that was the folder it was saving to instead of my desktop, it wouldn't help.

(NOTE: Instructions might be a little different if you have a different touch pad thing then me. My computer uses "Synaptics Touch Pad V6.2") Ok, there should be a little touch pad logo in the notification area (right end of the task bar). Right click it and select "pointing device properties." Click the "device settings" tab. You'll see a list of devices that probably only has one thing, your touch pad. Select that and click the settings button this will open another window that looks like a small help list or something. One of the options in it is "tapping" click the + next to it to show the sub categories. Click the + next to "tap zone" to show it's properties. (NOTE: Almost forgot, make sure you have tapping and tap zones on. To turn them on click the word "tapping" or "tap zones" next to the pluses I just told you to click. There will be a little check box on the right, make sure it's checked.) Now There's 5 options One for each corner of the touch pad and one that let's you change the tap zone sizes. If you select one of then you'll see a list of commands you can set to that corner. Pick a corner you want to use as the middle click (top left doesn't interfere with scrolling if you use it) and find the "middle click" option in the list. Select it then hit apply. You can set all kinds of things to happen when you hit one of the corners of your touch pad. If you want you can also adjust exactly what counts as "the corner." Just go to "tap zone sizes" and you drag the little boxes in the touch pad diagram thing on the screen to whatever size you want. It will also show you where you're touching the touch pad so you'll know if it counts as a tap. PS: This is not really something with Vista only. I tried it on an old laptop with XP too and it worked.
