Hey, not my fault Dream Theatre is boring. I'm not a huge Tool fan but I'd take anything Maynard over DT anyday. Also, I don't really see what loving QotSA has to do with my taste in prog rock.

Tool, Dream Theater is WAY overrated, Danny Carey from Tool is my favourite drummer of all time:D-Sniper99-

lol I love how a band that someone doesn't like is automatically overrated. Dream Theater is FAR from being overrated. What with them having one of the best guitarists, one of the best drummers, and one of the best keyboardists...ya, overrated.

I choose Dream Theater. I could never really get into Tool.

I like Tool, but they've been blown completely out of proportion as the greatest thing since sliced bread by some fans. Kinda overrated, so Dream Theater for me.

Besides, they have some of the best talent that I've ever seen.

Dream Theater. I find a majority of Tool's stuff to be repetitive, but it's not really a fair comparison since Tool has far less albums than Dream Theater does. I appreciate that a lot of people here can at least know the difference between opinion and fact, and recognize that Dream Theater has a ridiculous amount of talent. If you haven't seen them play live, I encourage you to look at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieRFnlcsZ0g&fmt=18 and compare it to Tool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1904iZ9OAuk&fmt=1. I won't make anybody's opinions for them, but I'd say it's fairly obvious who's more technical. Whether or not you like that sort of thing is a personal opinion.

I like Tool more because while Dream Theater are better musicians, I think Tool are better songwriters.

I don't know, that's just me. I know people who like Dream Theater and hate Tool and people who just don't like either.

I know it doesn't mean they can write the best music (even though they have some pretty amazing material), but saying Dream Theater is overrated is just completely untrue, whether or not you like them.

I love whenever these debates come up cause you always get the "oh man these guys are more technical!!!!" Your comparing mainly self taught guys and guys who went to Berkelee, one of the finest music schools in the world. lol. They both do what they do, and they do it well. I definitely dig Tool more on an artistic level and their use of visuals. Apples and Oranges really.

Maynard's voice is just so rare, it's amazing.

I prefer Tool over Dream Theatre, I've never even heard of that band until now, looked at some vids on YouTube and I thought it was boring.

On the other hand, I'd take A Perfect Circle over both of those two anyday.

I've never liked Tool. Maybe it was just the particular songs I've listened too but I've always hated them. Just listened to Dream Theater for the first time (that I can remember) and they're not too shaby.

I choose Dream Theater. I could never really get into Tool.

Let's look at which band is more derivative:

Dream Theater: The most popular prog metal band today, but they rip off Queensryche in almost all of their songs. The lyrics are not very good either. Just having good musicianship doesn't mean that DT is a good band.

Tool: No band sounds like Tool, which is a good thing. Their lyrics are almost unmatched in their brilliance, and they aren't as arrogant as the DT guys. DT's musicianship is better, though.

Final Verdict: Tool wins! No offense, but Dream Theater is probably the most accessible prog metal band out there, so they attract people with more mainstream tastes. DT=mainstream.

I should also mention that Threshold, Savatage, Pain of Salvation, Jorn and Queensryche kick both their asses in the prog metal genre.
