Both are great bands IMO but which do you think is better?
I say Tool

I prefer Tool, by far. Dark_Knight6
I am very disappointed with you DK6, since you liked QOTSA, I thought you would have good taste as far as Prog Rock
I like DT better, but Tool is still an awesome band.AxeStrangler
Your sig is Petrucci, so I was pretty much guessing you liked DT

Hey, not my fault Dream Theatre is boring. I'm not a huge Tool fan but I'd take anything Maynard over DT anyday. Also, I don't really see what loving QotSA has to do with my taste in prog rock.

I am a fan of Queens of The Stone Age and I was hoping tha me and you would like Dream Theater as well. I meant no offense by what I said whatsoever
Tool, Dream Theater is WAY overrated, Danny Carey from Tool is my favourite drummer of all time:D-Sniper99-
lol I love how a band that someone doesn't like is automatically overrated. Dream Theater is FAR from being overrated. What with them having one of the best guitarists, one of the best drummers, and one of the best keyboardists...ya, overrated.
I choose Dream Theater. I could never really get into Tool.

also this!Dream Theater. I find a majority of Tool's stuff to be repetitive, but it's not really a fair comparison since Tool has far less albums than Dream Theater does. I appreciate that a lot of people here can at least know the difference between opinion and fact, and recognize that Dream Theater has a ridiculous amount of talent. If you haven't seen them play live, I encourage you to look at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieRFnlcsZ0g&fmt=18 and compare it to Tool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1904iZ9OAuk&fmt=1. I won't make anybody's opinions for them, but I'd say it's fairly obvious who's more technical. Whether or not you like that sort of thing is a personal opinion.

Well put
Doesn't mean they can write the best music...NecroKvltMuffin
I know it doesn't mean they can write the best music (even though they have some pretty amazing material), but saying Dream Theater is overrated is just completely untrue, whether or not you like them.
And to the debate on the better drummer, Portnoy or Carey... wow that's one for the ages. Maybe some other time, :)kayn83um. portnoy!

It's all cool, I didn't take offense to anything (sorry if it seemed that way). I thought that you were implying that QotSA are prog rock. So, I was like "huh?" :P

Maynard's voice is just so rare, it's amazing.
I prefer Tool over Dream Theatre, I've never even heard of that band until now, looked at some vids on YouTube and I thought it was boring.
On the other hand, I'd take A Perfect Circle over both of those two anyday.

Let's look at which band is more derivative:
Dream Theater: The most popular prog metal band today, but they rip off Queensryche in almost all of their songs. The lyrics are not very good either. Just having good musicianship doesn't mean that DT is a good band.
Tool: No band sounds like Tool, which is a good thing. Their lyrics are almost unmatched in their brilliance, and they aren't as arrogant as the DT guys. DT's musicianship is better, though.
Final Verdict: Tool wins! No offense, but Dream Theater is probably the most accessible prog metal band out there, so they attract people with more mainstream tastes. DT=mainstream.
