Can't believe no one mentioned Full Metal Jacket. One of the best, up there with Platoon. Paths of Glory is pretty good, a little satirical, but not as bad a Dr Strangelove.

You either like something or you don't. Some film are an acquired taste though, so if you've only seen it once, see it again you may feel differently about it. You don't have to like something because other people say they do. It's just their opinions.

*breaks your shield; turns you to ash* Now, listen up: The action sequences (Ride of the Valkyries scene, most notably) were were enjoyable, the dialogue was great, and it was well acted by Sheen, Brando and Duvall. I loved the theme of isolation and madness, and it was conveyed well by the mind of Sheen's character. I also liked the tone, I guess. SPOILARS: It was like Sheen and his party were never going to make it out alive on their mission, and it sort of immersed me into the movie; I really wanted them to survive. Even Brando's character was aimeable, despite being the 'baddy'... To each their own, naturally. >.>

The killing Fields is one I forgot about. Its Vietnam, pre and post U.S. withdrawal. Goes into the massacre that took place after. The story follows some journalist who were covering events. Its a true story and i highly recommend it.

Your list is incomplete. A Bridge Too Far, The Bridge Over The River Kwai, and Zulu are essential. Das Boot and Tora! Tora! Tora! belong there too.

Some old / obscure movies in my list!

In no particular order:

  • Tora! Tora! Tora! (Perhaps the best "Pearl Harbor" movie)
  • Braveheart
  • Das Boot (WWII German U-boat)
  • Zulu (British vs thousands of Zulus at Rorke's Drift, South Africa)
  • A Bridge Too Far (Operation Market Garden, WWII)
  • The Blue Max (WWI aviation)
  • Operation Crossbow (WWII story focusing on the V1 and V2 rockets)

I agree with most of it, but I'd pull Braveheart as it's just too full of innaccuracies. I think I'd replace it with Glory.

Bridge over the River Kwai. Band of Brothers. Saving Private Ryan. The Patriot. Black Hawk Down. Oh, and to anyone who says Flags of our Fathers...did you even watch that movie? That was just terrible. All it did was follow a drunk guy throughout the movie. There was hardly any fighting.
