I dont get why this movie is so popular, aside from Robert downey jr I thought it was pretty mediocre at best. Ben Stiller has never been funny, jack black was stupid, and the so called clever satire part with Tom Cruise playing the loud producer was about as funny and clever as a kick in the nuts. What do you guys think of this film? I would give it a 5 at most. Film-Guy
I haven't watched it because of my brother's recommendation not to...he said he can't even remember most of it, which is pretty telling. If a movie is that forgettable, it's not worth watching.
I got a great kick out of the panda scene, but thats maybe because I like pandas and Im a big fan of the Predator movie :)
But other then that scene, it was pretty mediocre.
Different strokes for different folks... or whatever that expression is.
As for me, Tropic Thunder was one of my favorite movies of 2008 (#4, behind Milk, Gran Torino, and Iron Man); I would probably give it somewhere around an 8-8.5/10.
The whole movie is a satire on Hollywood, with a star-studded cast being directed by an amateur, a producer that's just plain evil, and actors that takes a role so seriously that they forgot who they really are.hiphops_savior
If Trophic Thunder is a satire it is a pretty weak one. Satire is best when it is subtle and you can barely tell it is satirical. A good satire is something like What Just Happened, The Extras Christmas Special, Thank you for smoking, Brass Eye, and American Psycho. The evil producer is not subtle or satirical at alll, everyone thinks of producers as evil, how is that clever at all? The director Steve Coogan, and Robert downey jr were the only funny characters in the film imo.

That movie clearly was not meant to be subtle in any way.

Different people have different taste. I thought it was pretty funny, but others that I know have said otherwise or they just haven't seen it. Robert Downey Jr was hilarious in the movie, but of course he won't win the Oscar.barcx17PLease change that sig!!!

In any case, it was the funniest movie of the year (imo), and one of my favorites (like I said, #4, behind Milk, Gran Torino, and Iron Man).

Meh I thought In Bruges was much funnier but thats just my opinion:P
Yes. Clearly, you're wrong, because my opinions are facts :D.
Just kidding :P. I'm not that big of a douche :P.
Am I the only one that felt awful for laughing at simple jack?-Sniper99-Yes but mainly because you actually found it funny, not because of the subject material.

Laughing because you thought it was legitimately funny? Or laughing because you thought it was a good parody?

Yeah I thought that part was pretty stupid, not funny or clever just stupid. One of the funniest films o 2008 that I dont think anyone saw is Nobel Son.
I thought it was pretty funny. But its not one of those movies that I would really watch again. But for me, that aren't many movies that I can watch more than once.

 a Gio hater?
I like Gio, but I might change it to Vela or Guardado cause they're my favorites :D

In my opinion, it was one of the most enjoyable comedies I've seen in quite some time because it was multi-layered in its comedic writing.

But on DVD I'd give it a 7.5/10, I find myself watching it now and bursting out laughing.

honestly, i didnt even find downey jr to be that funny. coogan was pretty funny when he died. but you know...he was dead so his time in the spotlight was shortlived.
cruise played a ben stiller role. of course if stiller had played the role exactly the same (and im sure he would have), nobody would have payed attention because hes done it before and it wasnt funny. but tom cruise plays it and he gets nominated left and right.
and well...jack black was jack black...
I thought it was absolutely hilarious, a real p*ss take on Hollywood, with a lot of clever in jokes. I love the the fake trailers at the beginning of the film. Jack Black doesn't have as much presence as the other actors though. He's been funnier.
Tom Cruise is great: "You sir are an American hero. Now shut your fu*king mouth".
