I'm the guitarist for the jazz band at my high school. Tonight I recieved a piece of music titled Dream of the Return by Pat Methany, and was told to learn it. That means I have to play a guitar solo by the the best guitarist of all time. Look up Pat Mehthany - Dream of the Return on youtube, the solo I have to play starts at 2:40.

Nothing about that video would indicate that he is anywhere close to being the greatest guitarist of all time. Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Yngwie Malmnsteen, Eddie Van Halen, Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughn, George Harrison, Chuck Berry, Jeff Beck, and Randy Rhoads would all like to have a word with you.

Well clearly you know nothing about guitar. Simply because someone can play pentatonic scales with heavy distortion doesn't make them great, or even good for that matter.

Nothing about that solo was difficult. I know plenty about the guitar, having been playing it for the last six years. And that was a sweeping generalization you made. The respective styIes of the guitarists I named are incredibly diverse. George Harrison and Duane Allman sound nothing alike, but they're both incredibly talented and neither of them used distortion.

Sorry if I made a generalization, but once you discover jazz guitar, you will know what you have been missing. It is true though some of those guitarists are unique and creative, but most people think shredding is just the greatest thing ever. The guitar solo in the Methany song was done with a guitar synth, and I believe it truly shows his musicality.

Anyone can become a guitar player. The level of work and dedication required to become great differs from person to person however.

Jimmy Page has many parts that use absolutely no distortion. I can tell you are not a rock fan. Distortion is often a way to cover up a guitarists lack of skills, but these guitarists in particular... well, lets just say they don't need to resort to that. I'm not gonna argue about "the greatest guitarist of all time", but to say the crazy train solo is made up of simple scales... just no.

Jimmy Page plays incredibly sloppy. Why he is considered one of the best I'll never know.

Well, that's kind of subjective. I guess your right in calling it "sloppy". The same way for every instrument in a medal band.

I mean, I would not call James Hetfield or Ozzy Osbourne a great singer, but I would call them great vocalists. Then there's bassists. If you listen to one of Cliff Burtons solo's, a lot will say it sucks because of too much distortion. However, he is almost universally considered a skilled bassist. The distortion fits the song.

I wont even attempt to name the best guitarist of all time. It all comes down to the guitarist's style. By the way, the reason Jimmy Page is so popular is because he has the ability to make a memorable riff. But theres a bigger reason. Listen to other guitarist's back in the same time frame. Then compare. Nothing like it had been done, and artists still cite him as an influence today.

I see what your saying, but if you do some searching you'll find musicians that do things more incredible than Page or any other rock gutarist could ever dream of. As for bass, do a youtube search for Victor Wooten.

It's well composed, but it's nothing that any of the mentioned guitarists couldn't play. Composition ability and playing ability are two very different things

I also see where your coming from, and I'm all for trying different genres of music.

As for "shredding"... well, again that's subjective. I can't stand the vocals of any rapper, and have no idea people like it... but it sells.

Dude, chill out. You will have PLENTY of time to learn the solo. I've been with the Jazz Band at my high school ever since I was a Freshman and they don't expect you to know the solo right when you get it! Work on it a half hour every day and you'll know it no sweat in a month or less. No reason to worry about it.

Put yourself in my sister's shoes.

She was in Jazz band and played saxophone, piano, and xylophone. Then the teacher comes up and says "I need a bass guitarist in one month and you need to play for these three songs" so she sat down with the bass, learned how to play it (the bass, not just the songs) and she kicked ass. Bass isnt as insane as regular guitar, I know, but comeon...you can do it!

Well it is jazz. So explain to your teacher that despite your ability to read music, you felt more inclined to improvise over the solo like they did back when jazz was born. And then you can take little licks from it and quote them in the solo you choose to make. That's what makes live performances so great.

I agree. Its fun to kick ass AND piss your teacher off; its like a quarterback that ignores his coaches instructions but scores a touchdown anyway.
