copper, silver and gold are all elements, physical and chemical reactions that the said person preformed will not alter what chemicals are within a substance, only a nuclear reaction can do this.

This was in some form or another, just a trick, sorry.

Yes, the copper they're made of is worth more than the face value of the penny.

They used to, modern pennys are only 94% steel, 1.5% Ni, 4.5% Cu and cost about 7/10 of a cent to make.....

its an old trick, what you do is you add zinc (I'm pretty sure its zinc) to a penny on a hot plate, then you take it out dry it and apply to a flame, it turns gold (did this in science).

Actually I think they're zinc inside and copper plated. I remember hearing that they cost more to make than their face value and that there was concern that if the difference became too much people would buy a lot of them and melt them to sell the metal. I don't remember where I heard that I'll see if I can find a link.

hmm i remember that episode, it was caustic soda in a pan of boiling water, with an iron object (such as nails) which removed the thin layer of copper, and then heating it up with direct contact from a flame would make the silvery colour go a yellowy gold colour (woo first post :) )
