Story

"A major U.S. government study on rats has found a link between cellphones and cancer, an explosive finding in the long-running debate about whether mobile phones cause health effects.

The multiyear, peer-reviewed study, by the National Toxicology Program, found “low incidences” of two types of tumors in male rats that were exposed to the type of radio frequencies that are commonly emitted by cellphones."

I wonder if they'll start putting a surgeon general's warning on cellphone packages.

These studies. All I can say is that believing them are harder and harder, especially after watching John Oliver's piece on it.

With that in mind, what DOESN'T cause cancer these days, considering at one point there was a study that BACON does it too?

According to my study, that I started two minutes ago and just now finished, Oxygen and Hydrogen cause cancer. Particulary if one Hydrogen atom and two Oxygen atoms ( H2O ) are combined.

Then it's pretty much liquid cancer, which you can't escape from cause our bodies are 70% H2O.

(Don't believe every study you find, many are bogus and simply made to provide revenue to a good amount of research facilities/groups)

.....You sir are correct.

Please excuse me while I go perform seppuku now.

Aww...man, such a huge screw up on my study.
No revenue for me.

They subjected the rats to cell phone radiation 9 hours a day for 2 years. I believe only 1-2% of the rats developed cancer. I suppose you could say that cellphones increase the risk for cancer, but it's so marginal that far more people will be killed by texting then they will by developing tumors because of the radiation cell phones emit.

The most unbelievable part is that ANYONE would think that keeping a microwave emitting device near your head for any length of time would be safe.

The only thing we should undoubtedly be doing is curbing our use of cellphones.

Sounds like nonsense. They neglected to tell anyone that the radiowaves emitted by cell phones are far too thick to pierce cell walls. You need to pierce the cell wall to initiate the rampant cell division cancer works with. That's a simple fact that has been articulated so many times.

Well, if you would look for correlations, then there's a correlation between everything. What matters is the strength of that correlation. Given the youth's compulsive usage of cellphones, a considerable amount of them should contract cancer for this study to qualify as reliable.

Don't the low frequency waves have a weak penetration to the body? In the technological age we live in, pretty much everything emits some form of radiation.

Do rats match up to our bodies?

Phones are the size of rats, so unless the new Samsung Galaxy is the size of a Mini Cooper, i don't think we need to worry.

Also, too lazy to read the article.

The way I heard a physicist, maybe Degrasse Tyson, explain it was that the waves have to be thin to a level where they can pierce cell walls. He explained how these waves that cell phones emit are far too thick to be able to penetrate the cell wall.

Yeah, the most unbelievable part is that...it's factually true. Microwaves don't affect the human body at all. You obviously don't know jack shit about e.m. waves and shouldn't talk about this stuff unless you actually study it.

I really don't like these kinds of things. Nothing causes cancer, I mean that as it literally does. You can get it for no reason whatsoever, and you can get it because your grandmother had it. You can get it from being unlucky, just like you can get it from smoking cigarettes, just like you can get it from too much sun and being unhealthy. But not always, just sometimes and for some people. If you can get cancer for no reason, you can get it for any reason.

Cell phones are a cancer, more like.

Aren't cell phones in the UHF band? Seemed pretty high frequency to me.

I guess compared to other signals in the air they're slow, but in terms of general signals they're definitely not low frequency.

That goes against what the folks in my school's microwave engineering lab say and just a quick look on google scholar shows recent journal articles stating otherwise. Are you sure about that?

Obviously N3O is someone who won't believe the truth until it's obvious to him/her...cellphones will cetainly give people cancer and the longer we all take part in it the more of us that will experience it. It sucks, and about the only thing we can do now is just use methods to keep that shit away from our bodies. Use an earpiece or something, especially the kids in the family!

Lol. Those are human labels, they don't have any physical meaning. Light coming from the sun is literally hundreds of thousands of times more hazardous than any signal used for telecommunication.

Microwaves don't penetrate the skin. The most an intense microwave field can do to you is cook your skin, which is what happens in ovens. Telecommunications don't need that kind of power and their effect is absolutely negligible in any thermodynamical analysis.

Ok, what is your take on this http://nopr.niscair.res.in/bitstream/123456789/16123/1/IJEB%2051%283%29%20187-200.pdf

"The effects of EMFs emitted by mobile phones on the central nervous system (CNS) have become a particular focus of concern owing to the fact that mostly mobile phones are kept near head during talking mode and are in close proximity to the brain [12-14]. During these operations, the antenna of a cellular phone emits radio frequency electromagnetic fields that can penetrate 4-6 cm deep into the human brain [15,16]. Due to penetration of radiations, hippocampus and pineal gland may be affected by the decrease in their protein kinase C and melatonin activity respectively [17]. Experimental data from Hardell group18,19 on health implications of long term mobile phone radiation exposure to brain resulting in tumor formation is more likely to occur on the side of the head that the cell handset is used."

or this http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=645813

While these may not be absolute proof one way or another, it's clear that the jury is still out on the subject.

Also, no offense meant by this. But a bachelor's in physics and an in-progress masters doesn't real give you grounds to act as an authority on the bio effects of EM waves (which is seems like you are trying to do based on your comments to @doozie78 .) Posting actual references/sources to your claims would be much more helpful for a discussion on the topic.
