Hey guys,

Last night while I was watching TV, my Protron plasma(pl3250 model) just randomly shut itself off. I thought maybe I had lost power or the surge protector was off but my xbox, Fios stb and other equipment had power still. I have tried different outlets, thrown the on/off switch in the back...nothing. I should also point out that the amber light when it's off, with power, is also not on. Anyone have any ideas what could have caused this, if its fixable or is my TV completely dead. I would go to a repair service but the closest guy is about 90 minutes from where I'm located.

Proton? Sounds fried, off-brand TVs don't typically have make it very long. If the TV is still under warranty replace it, otherwise get a new, better TV. I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" for most things.

Sounds like a power source or overheating issue....can't be sure though. Almost anything is fixable. Just somethings are not 'worth' fixing (repair cost V replacement cost) I would call and get some estimates, then factor in transporting it 90 min.

True, but it wasn't like it was dirt cheap, I got it in Costco for about 600, 2 years ago, which was right inline with the Vizio they did not have in-stock.

Oh, I'm familiar with the brand...I bought a Proton-esque TV around that same time frame (mine is a Maxent).

Sam's Club has an unlimited return policy...100% satisfaction guaranteed, no matter what (people brought back 10 year old mattresses, compressors that had been outside for years, etc) Costco may have something similar to Sam's...worth checking out IMO

Thanks for that info, I'll have to ask my dad about that when he gets back since he's the one with the membership.

Most people do not know that...it is not something that they advertise -don't want people bringing back 10 year old tv's just to upgrade b/c they are no longer "100% satisfied" -my guess is that your dad will not know since it is kept on the DL I would just call and ask if they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee like Sam's Club..."are you as good as your competitor?" -if not, you now know where to buy your next TV

Just called them, they have a similar policy but it excludes electronics.

That SUCKS...the only thing excluded at Sam's is computers...even then people got to return them if they complained enough -my advice would be to bite the bullet and get a new one at Sam's (return forever there) -if you fix yours it may just break again...then you will be in the same boat

I may have to bite the bullet and just get a new TV when I can, since I'm in school right now I don't have the time to get it fixed or the dough to get a new one right now. Crappy a** TV!!!

crap this means no Xbox or PS!!

you might want to do some checking ( google etc. ) to see if other people have had similar problems and what it was diagnosed as. more times than not when i have a problem with electronics, sw, etc.. other people have had the same problems and solutions can be found looking online.

just starting doing that, its hard to find info since they changed names from Protron to Spectron after I purchased the set. but the few things i found dont make it sound worthwhile as it happened again after being fixed to a few people.
