Judging by the trailer, David F. Sandberg is going with the route of Happy Death Day with this adaption from the looks of it. It looks good than I had hoped for.
If this movie released without the Until Dawn name I'd have seen it anyways. And I'll still see it despite any criticism I might have about the pointless nature of this adaptation. First off it was a well received game with only modest sales so I can't imagine it'll have much draw on the name. If anything it might hurt the IP more than help it if it flops.
I'm feeling the whole idea why Until Dawn never turned into a series like Dark Pictures Anthology was Sony wanted it to be more successful. Frankly I don't see how this reboot for the remake and adaptation will help unless it's a much larger success. I get feeling Sony now wants to start making more Until Dawn games, the latest game suggests sequels from what I hear was added to it. But I get feeling without film being a phenomenal success, and perhaps with the state of the remake sales, maybe there won't be any more Until Dawn content down the road.
Some see this as a blatant misuse of the IP name for clout. And perhaps there's some merit to that notion. Seems every other YouTuber reaction video to trailer creams in their pants when the PS logo appears. I think that's the marketing reaction Sony wants to exploit more than anything, and it speaks their language with "Exclusively in movie theaters". It'd be nice if Sony didn't treat their audience that they can be played like sock puppets.
I imagine, like The Last of Us, it will probably make for a better movie/series than game.
Wonder when they'll do the robot one.

The "Groundhog Day" mechanic in horror movies is really great. Happy Death Day being a good example, as you mentioned, but I've seen it in others as well.
I feel it is underused, maybe because it could be labeled as unoriginal (which I guess it is) but it's a lot of fun if the movie can balance the comedy/non-serious aspect with the serious aspect (as Happy Death Day did).
