My ex-instructor says that enrollment in adult karate cl@sses is way down, same with kung fu too apparently and its clear why, there are so many MMA douchebags around these days who think they're so tough because they watch MMA and take some stupid fighting cl@sses. A lot of them really annoy me because they aren't taking the traditional route of learning wholely a martial art- not only the moves but the philosophy that comes with it.

I wish they would require people to take normal martial art cl@sses before doing those damned MMA cl@sses, too many violent nutbags just wanna learn how to break someone's jaw and are not interested in learning about traditional martial arts, their history and their core values beliefs.

I can't believe they are censoring the word cl@sses

Why do the beliefs & core values need to come attached to the martial art? Nothing wrong with just learning how to break jaws.

Well I disagree. You shouldn't teach people how to use deadly force without teaching them how to control it and telling them when to use it. In my opinion.

there are plenty of annoying people that really take martial arts seriously too. there was this guy that came as a guest to my friends' karate classes that actually thought he could stop a charging attacker by "focusing his chi into a ball and throwing it at him." i kid you not.

I can agree with you... somewhat. I am not a fan of Karate or Kung Fu. In my opinion, they are not the best to defend yourself in a real combat situation. You can learn things from all martial arts, so I respect them. However, there are much more efficient fighting styles out there such as boxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu, and muay thai. I'm not a fan of "MMA gyms", I wish people would instead do their martial arts separately. For example, train at a Muay Thai gym and a jiu jitsu gym. Not an all in one place.

i agree, for example the boxing/muay thai teachers in a MMA class just arnt as elite as the ones you would find in a 100% boxing, muay thai class. BUT sooner or later you have to move to a mma gym because where els will you train wrestling and bjj? they are hard to find by them selves. and by moving to a MMA gym you can get a idea of what MMA fighting is all about.

Do it!! I recommend to start with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It is a traditional martial art, and it is highly effective. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is how the UFC got started. Little jiu jitsu black belt Royce Gracie entered UFC 1 and submitted boxers, wrestlers, karate guys, etc. Not only is it highly effective, but it is safe, as it is a grappling art. You will "wrestle" with people and try to submit them by learning submission holds and chokes. No getting punched in the face, and you learn some very real and very effective fighting skills.

don't generalize. if you hate on MMA, you hate on a variety of martial arts. because MMA is using several martial arts in combat. there has been an influx of meatbags getting into MMA however. which sucks.

I don't believe you.. first of all, when did you learn to break arms in karate? Secondly, even if you could, it wouldn't take a few seconds. Third, if you were taken down by a wrestler, that is the perfect time to break arms. It's pretty hard to break somebodies arm standing. It's possible, but very difficult unless the right situation presents itself.

k i was joking about breaking arms the only one they teached me was when a guy holds ur wrist you twist his hand, straighten his arm and put pressure in the elbow area or step over with ur leg and snap the arms upwards( which i doubt will work in real time). i didnt go to bjj bud i went to karate. they teach you jack about ground fihgting and how to break arms. the kid wasnt a wrestler but he was very athletic, he threw me down, mounted me, and beat my @ss.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQMMuYgI54E here you go. the first move they show. after you have them there you can apply pressure to the elbow or step over it and break it.

I could understand why you want that. It would be nice to understand the philosophy of a martial art. However, I would prefer to move past that BS and learn to actually defend myself in a real life situation as opposed to learning to sit on my fingers for hours on end.

[QUOTE="bobbetybob"][QUOTE="Jandurin"]holy crap i've been thinking about taking a karate class but MMA sounds way cooler!hedden93

Dude, we should take classes together bro, it'll be radical, and then we can go out and beat some nerds up, yeaaah!!!

Yeah and then we can wear Tapout shirts everyday and walk with a ridiculous swagger. Sounds awesome to me bro.

 seriously..

But I understand what you mean TC. It's pretty annoying.

MMA is interesting. You can't compare it to certain martial arts. Many martial arts are more than just fighting, MMA is in general about self defense and fighting.

I still would prefer to learn Krav Maga over any other. Actual application to real life defense.

That's funny, because I wear Tapout and do none of this.

Stereotypes are so fun! I bet if I used racial slurs and stereotyped you guys would pretend to care and get all defensive though. Oh yeah, that's happened plenty of times before. Especially in that one thread "Where did the stereotype about blacks loving fried chicken and watermelon come from" and half of OT got all defensive over nothing.
