Wow, I'm starting to think US blocking UN criticism of Israel is just a natural reflex.

http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_15200395

Israel faced heavy criticism in an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council on Monday in response to its deadly attack on an aid flotilla trying to breach the Gaza blockade, but attempts to issue a formal statement stalled after the United States rejected the strong condemnation sought by Turkey.

Turkey proposed a statement that would condemn Israel for violating international law, demand a U.N. investigation and demand that Israel prosecute those responsible for the raid and pay compensation to the victims. It also called for the end of the blockade.

The Obama administration refused to endorse a statement that singled out Israel, and proposed a broader condemnation of the violence that would include the assault of the Israeli commandos as they landed on the deck of the ship.

While condemnation of Israel in the Security Council is not uncommon, the criticism at the emergency session by Turkey and Lebanon was notable for both its vehemence and for the broad array of countries demanding an independent investigation into the decision to fire on civilians in what they described as a humanitarian mission.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu of Turkey, whose country's once close relations with Israel have deteriorated markedly since Israel's invasion of Gaza in 2008, called the attack "tantamount to banditry and piracy; it is murder conducted by a state."

Most likely, Turkey still can say it was an act of war and pull a NATO forcing the US to fight, or break teh treaty. One would destroy the current Administarion, the other will ruin the US's reputation world wide. Turkey right now has all the right cards to get what ever it wants from from teh US or Israel. The only question is wil they use them?

Yeah, I do have to admit the relationship between the US and Israel is perhaps the most baffling thing about the US. The unshakable, almost rabid support of Israel is quite disturbing.

I understand friendship and ideological sympathies, but I get the impression the US and its people are willing to literally sacrifice their entire country for Israel, if situations demanded it. There has to more to the relationship, because it sure isnt friendship, its something deeper.

Our backing of Israel started with President Harry S. Truman (Democrat). He recognized Israel 11 minutes after it declared itself a nation.

Here is what Truman said:

Hitler had been murdering Jews right and left. I saw it, and I dream about it even to this day. The Jews needed some place where they could go. It is my attitude that the American government couldn't stand idly by while the victims [of] Hitler's madness are not allowed to build new lives.

I wouldn't underestimate their influance if i were the US, the Turks hold a considerable amount of influance in the mid east. If you ingnore them, the US will have a harder time in the region.

It would seem that the US's relationship with Israel is very similar to China's relationship with North Korea. Both relationships greatly harm the US and China's international relations with no benefit other than ideological ones.

I really wish the US would drop its support of Israel. We give them a disgusting amount of financial and military aid and all we get in return is a PR ****storm with the rest of the world and especially the Middle East in particular. Oh yeah, and how does Israel repay us? By turning around and selling some of the weapons and tech we give them to other nations like China (and some of said nations are outright hostile to us).

People are surprised? At first I thought Israel was the US attack dog but I was wrong, Israel is more like the US child who can do no wrong. However it's hilarious that they didn't even condemn the Israeli's for hurting one of their own citizens. DON'T LET SAUDI ARABIA OR IRAN DO IT THOUGH CAUSE YEA!!!!

So you're saying it was stillborn? Anyway, while the UN is a monumental failure when it comes to peacekeeping, preventing war, and punishing countries for breaking international law and treaties, it has been a success as far as humanitarian aid and projects are concerned.

It wasn't the right thing to do well at least imo, unless Americans are willing to give native americans control 1/2 of the US or something because we all know the atrocities that Americans committed to them... imo they should have simply relocated the jewish communities to other parts of europe and the US.

This entire Isreal debacle has completely destabalized a region all for what? The US needs to realize that not agreeing with Isreal does not mean you agree with Iran, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. Isreal is just out of control because they are virtually untouchable because of the military they have and the backing of the US. The beauty of this is that Israel is commiting cultural genocide on the Palestinian population, but the sole reason for the state of Isreal existing is because people felt sorry for the Holocaust. Its horrible that it occurred and no society should suffer the horrors of the holocaust, but honestly was it really worth it? Since Israel's creation how many wars have occurred and how many generations have been taught to hate Israel and the Jewish population? Would the US do what Isreal just did?Who attacks a boat full of scholars and peaceful protesters with special forces?

Now Israel is seriously putting up more apartments which ban Palastinian residents from living there, and if forcing them to live in ghetto's under guard.

But the US congress only sees it 2 ways: Support Isreal, or be a Terrorist. This Arrogance will just get worse over the years if they don't change.

Nah, if anything they're just seeing how much they can get away with before the US puts its foot down, which I dont see happening anytime soon unless Israel does something REALLY bad.

I doubt it.

I seriously don't. While it may seem like Israel can defend its self, we have to remember where quite a bit of help comes from.

Indeed. If the US were to announce tomorrow that we would no longer be supporting Israel in any way, there's a decent chance that Israel would find itself the target of an invasion waged by every other country in the region within a month. Or at the very least they'd find themselves the target of an invasion once they lost their military superiority over the other countries in the region (so about 10-20 years of a lack of any significant military upgrades).
