MCALLEN, Texas — Dozens of Mattel Inc. employees were on their way to another day of work making Power Wheels in Mexico's industrial heartland when gunshots erupted around them and a grenade ripped into one of their buses, killing one worker and wounding five.

The battle between drug traffickers and the army near the city of Monterrey last week was the sort of violence that is frightening U.S. companies away from new investments south of the border, where organized criminals are increasingly turning to kidnappings, extortion and cargo thefts despite a government offensive against drug cartels.

As a result, only half of the U.S. firms surveyed recently by the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce said they would go ahead with new investment plans in Mexico and several companies, including Whirlpool Corp., have recently announced they would put new factories elsewhere citing concerns about safety.

Story here.

Discuss. One out of 10 companies reported kidnappings and 60 percent said their employees were beaten or threatened in 2010, according to the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce.

Are the taxes so high here that you risk your employees in Mexico?

The answer to this issue?

Arizona. You get the best of both worlds.

Not really. There's basically a neutral zone accross the Arizona by the border. The area is closed off to US citizens because of the drug violence which is seeping in to the US. It's no man's land.

If the US would just annex Mexico and turn them in to a state or comonwealth, all the problems would be solved. Illegal immigration would no longer be an issue and our armed forces could take over the drug war and crush the resistance. Of course, that wall would have been a waste, but we can just move it to the next border. Until then, yes, US business should pull out of Mexico and remain out until it's safe.

Yeah invading another country would solve all our problems. Especially countries that would force our armed forces to conduct peacekeeping indefinitely.

And you think American jobs are being hurt by illegal immigration? Wait till we have a country attached to us utterly decimated by poverty, with an open border.

The people of Mexico are a good people ... sadly their government is both useless and corrupt, and the cartels are taking over. The country isn't safe anymore.

Legalize drugs and have the government take it over. Making it more efficient and cheaper for everyone.

Yeah, its turning into a real bloodbath there. A corrupt government doesn't help also.
