Many American Muslims feel singled out by government anti-terror policies; significant minorities have been called names or had their mosques attacked; and most say it's harder to be a Muslim in the United States now than it was before September 11, 2001.

And yet the vast majority say their communities are very good places to live, that Americans are not hostile toward Muslims, and that American Muslims have a better quality of life than Muslims elsewhere, the survey of more than 1,000 American Muslims has found.

Support for Islamic extremism is not rising among Muslim Americans, who are much less likely to support terrorism than Muslims in many other countries, according to the study by the Pew Research Center in Washington.

Seven out of ten American Muslims have very unfavorable views of al Qaeda, while only 5% have favorable or somewhat favorable views.

I can attest to this as Michigan has one of the largest muslim communities in the states. Contrary to some beliefs, most of these people love their country and hate extremism probably more than most people.

Why? They're from a social group that has essentially been beaten down by the west for the last 50 years. Displacement in Gaza, propping up of Dictators by West interests for oil, selling of weapons to dictators to keep their populace under control... Im surprised more aren't in favor of extremism, to be honest. Fact of the matter is, Muslims have a crap PR department, if people only rationalized what it is the West has done to the Islamic world, you'd kinda understand how extremism rose Don't let the phony "they hate us for our freedom" crap blind you.. Those that hate us feel that way because we screwed them over, govern-mentally, economically, and socially. We are the enablers of their dictators and a large part of the reason their quality of life is low. Exactly, A group. The concept of muslim extremism isn't to kill muslims, even said by Bin Laden, it was to remove American interference in the Arab world. Again, I'm not supporting their actions (or ours, for that matter, we are as murderous as they are, if not more) but, the GOAL of the extremism is to eliminate western interference. You're absolutely right though, they've killed a lot of their own, as far as the political goal though, I'm surprised more don't support it, that's what I was referring to. Sorry if I didn't exemplify that enough.

It's been fairly common knowledge to most Muslim's that extremists are crazy and that the avereage Muslim does not want to be associated with them. That being said, asking them if they're favourable towards a terrorist group is pretty offensive. I don't live in the US, I live in Canada, but to be honest I'm pretty annoyed at what's shown of the Muslim world on TV.What you see of the Muslim world on TV are the rednecks of the Muslim world. It's not a true representation, at all.

That being said, I was born into a Muslim family but I'm not a practicing Muslim nor do I really prescribe to those beliefs - but I still get annoyed at the negative image that's constantly protrayed everywhere by the media towards the Muslim community -- and I really doubt a survey like this will make any difference.

How many people down here still support the Confederacy? My guess is that alot of them do. Even though they caused more American deaths than anyone else.

Have you been to NJ and South Florida? That's totally believable. Federal hate crime stats are spotty at best because reporting to the FBI is voluntary. As a result, many jurisdictions don't even bother reporting at all. Also down in the South, many authorities don't even count sexual orientation as a basis for a hate crime. There is no standard. Besides, who's even talking about hate crimes?

Ok then. Here's an example from the Washington Post.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/19/AR2007111901653.html

From Article:

Alabama, she said, does not consider crimes linked to sexual orientation to be hate crimes. "That's one example of why hate crime statistics are basically a worthless number. It's not the FBI's fault."

Does this stop your BS in its tracks? BTW I'm not bashing the place I live. I'm just pointing out what I see and experience everyday.

i have yet to start my BS. federal numbers are the federal numbers what "alabama" thinks does not effect national statistics. alabama-> state. FBI-federal. one is nation wide, the other is 1/50th of said nation. one gets its guides from the federal government and the other from the state. you are mixing apples and toy cars.

Just because the governments in the West have exploited the Muslim people doesn't mean those people should be in favor of a group that kills innocent people. Sure, they should be mad, but supporting a group who kills civilians is not rational and doesn't make any sense. Not to mention that extremist groups attack Muslims more than they attack the people in the west.

extremists Muslims tend to attack Muslims they disagree with more often then they target non-Muslim targets. Usually it's Muslims who work with the West who get targeted as well.

As for the topic at hand.

I do love the USA. I got some real complaints about it's policies, but that is different from hating it.

Oh boy. You obviously didn't read the article. Read it then get back to me.

Glad to hear.. Even after they have been demonized quite often, mainly from the Republican party/extreme right for years now.

extremists Muslims tend to attack Muslims they disagree with more often then they target non-Muslim targets. Usually it's Muslims who work with the West who get targeted as well.

As for the topic at hand.

I do love the USA. I got some real complaints about it's policies, but that is different from hating it.

I also hail from Michigan and can attest to this. I actually don't live that far from Dearborn which has one of, if not, the largest Muslin communities in the country.

This is somewhat off topic, but isn't it funny that it's okay to label the Tea Party by it's extremist minority, but the doing the same for Muslims and the terroists is a hate crime? Breaking News: It's not okay for either.

From what I've heard, I wouldn't disagree with them.

no i've never lived in Michigan, but i've but nowhere near Deerborn or Detroit. I've only been in the Upper Michigan portion of the state. I've been to several states and spent a good amount of time with other Muslims in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Texas. but i've been in several states on the continental US.

I have lived for extended period of time (years) in primarily four places in the USA.

Lakeville, Minnesota

Houston, Texas

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Whitewater, Wisconsin.
