The US ranks 25th in the world in average Internet connection speeds, and nearly half of all US residents' Internet connections fall below the US Federal Communications Commission's minimum definition of broadband, at 4 megabits per second download, according to a new report.Computerworld

The above is only an excerpt. You can read the full article here.

Seems to conincide with this report from earlier this year. I guess there is a reason as to why we still have 56k warnings here in OT. I doubt the FCC is going to reach its national broadband plan's goal by 2015. Do you agree, OT?

I'd be surprised if they did. I am also not surprised that we ranked so low.

Who cares? I don't really see why the connection speed between a private citizen and a privately owned internet provider should be any of the government's business, unless one of the parties is violating the terms of their contract.

I dislike how the article gives the median speed of the US and then the mean speeds of the countries with the top internet speeds.

Not surprising at all -size -being a technology leader The first point is easy to see. Some people struggle with how being a technology leader can actually impede progress though -the US comes out with stuff first/really early...they build up infrastructure...makes it hard to change later on because of size, investment, and 'customs' (ways of doing things -for example, many countries that have better cell phone service than the US bypassed the whole land line stage (they just jumped ahead because they were so far back)

I'm not a supporter of the Labour Party in Australia, however the National Broadband Network currently being built (giving 100Mb/s to ~90% of the population) is a good thing IMO

The SpeedTest.org 2010 Speed Matters Report for the US is pretty telling. If you want to live where really high speed internet is available, you need to live from around Ft. Belvoir VA to New England with Delaware being the #1 state for high speed connections.

That's actually pretty good considering how large the country is and how many small towns and remote areas there are. It's not like Japan where half of the country lives in one city and the rest lives in the suburbs of that city.

I looked at the rankings on SpeedTest and they currently have Iran as 175/185 with an average speed of .65Mb/s. That's a bit higher than what I experienced the last time I went there, but it's due to the government trying to prevent people from easy access to sites and videos that they don't agree with. But really I'm not surprised with the US rankings, ISPs seem to like increasing prices more than increasing speeds.

Problem is there is often a monopoly on "highspeed" internet in an area. Without competition the provider can charge what they want, and not feel the need to upgrade.

I'm in that situation with my 1mbps DSL:(

From what I understand, in many parts of the USA you have little to no choice in ISPs, so if you don't like the provider you've got, you can't do much. From this, many ISPs basically don't have to upgrade much about their service; it's their way or the highway. Contrast that with South Korea, Japan, the Netherlands, the places with very high internet speeds, which have high population density and very competitive broadband markets. Companies actually have to fight for your money.

Pretty sad.t3hrubikscube

meh, not really.

Its a big country, and very spread out. I've been to quite a few foreign countries, and the US is the only place where I can drive in places for hours upon hours without seeing a soul, city, etc.

I'd wager that in cities and more densely populated areas the internet connection speed ranks up there with some of the better countries, but you need to remember many of the states in the US have a population of about 5 people per square mile. Its just not worthwhile to have solid, reliable, fast internet in many parts of the US.

I live in California, in a fairly isolated but very nice part of the Central Coast (4 hours from San Francisco, 3.5 hours to LA), and while in town the internet is good, just outside in the country people simply do not get internet. Period. Unless they w ant satellite internet, which is crappy

So yeah, I suppose averaged out our internet isnt too great, but I think its a scenario of having pretty good internet 90% of the time, and abysmal internet 10% of the time, thus dragging it down.

mrbojangles25

This is probably what's doing it honestly.

Your example sort of hit on another point too; countries like South Korea and Japan see their governments take a very big hand in making sure high quality internet is delivered everywhere. In South Korea for example, the government had a program recently where it encouraged non-connected households to connect to broadband by teaching them how to do it.

The USA is far more laissez-faire, so like in the example you described, a company will provide internet access for the town, it will not bother rolling it out to the country. Since the government cannot/does not want to make them, it just isn't going to happen.

yes, this is true, I know this very well, my city was going to pay to increase the city's broadband capacity and our local internet monopoly protested saying they'd do it themselves, so when the city dropped it and put those dollars toward other projects the internet provider said they weren't going to enhance broadband capacity because the demand wasn't high enough (pfft)
