Naw I just see it as how powerful we are. We must be a pretty strong country to have that high of a debt and nothing any other country can do about it.

I was under the impression that this particular debt was the amount that the government had borrowed from the people in order to pay for its "goings on".

Alter_Echo

The "debt limit" is the amount of money the government can owe to all other countries.

Ok so let me make sure i understand this correctly, they are maxed out and will now begin pillaging other funds to stave off what will still happen anyway in or around August?

What are they hoping to accomplish by raiding pensions? By doing that, are they simply trying to "keep the lights turned on" long enough to come up with another more long term fix via budget restructuring, spending cuts and program disbands?

Since I doubt any country is going to do anything about it, hence the debt in the first place, probably nothing.

Our credit rating becomes supremely f***ed, and chances are it marks the beginning of the mother of all financial crises.

They can't, and they won't do anything, because they rely as much on us as we do them, and the last thing they want to do is turn their biggest customer into a financial ruin. No country is going to call in their debt, hence why national debts as a whole mean jack-freaking-squat.

When you default on your mortgage, the bank takes your house. When China decides to ask for their $$$, and the USA can't deliver?

Again, they're not going to ask. They can get far more out of the US when it's the prime receiver of their exports than they ever could with that debt America owes them. Not to mention the numerous times where other nations have called in debts and the nations being called promptly told them to go screw themselves.

If the US defaults on any of its debt, it's just likely to find it much harder to borrow money and if it does, at a much higher rate of interest - Just look at the Irish or Greeks (on a much worse scale, though).

Sad thing is the debt ceiling means nothing, and the govs just gonna keep pushing it higher....

You do know this can't go on forever... Even the U.S will have to default at some time... And I call it happening within ten or twenty years if nothigs done soon.

It would if we could excpect the US government not to raise it's ceiling....

There will eventually be a point when no matter how high they raise it no one will lend them money

According to a CNN article, only 18 percent of US citizens thought it wiser to raise the debt ceiling than to default on it's debt in August...

Well, how about we take out a loan to cover that debt and the remaining debt we will have with that loan will be tugged by tug boats. So then when the little tug boat has the debt, then the big tug boats will then be able to tug.
