Managing countless online account credentials and secure passwords is a daunting task for anyone. Setting up streamlined password managers and two-step verification tools offer a good start for improving security and making all those logins more manageable, but it's still a problematic system. With that in mind, the US government is considering an internet identity plan that would give you a single and more secure online identity (when you wanted to use it). Tech site Ars Technica breaks down how the internet identity plan might work. Sound like something you'd like?

As long as it's a voluntary thing, this sounds like a good idea.

I'm for it, it will give the Internet more realism and authenticity. Think of the possibilities, we can literally live online this way.

Nope. It would help manage users and pinpoint criminals. At the same time, the information database database of the internet would become much more regulated. One of the best things about the internet in anonymity. Without it, do you think half of the information uploaded would have been?

People act like they have such important things to hide, but ignore the fact that they post their whole life story on Facebook. No one cares about what you do, nor will the government. That being said, as long as something like this doesn't interfere with what you are allowed to access and when you are allowed to access it, I wouldn't mind.

Because some people prefer to remain anonymous when releasing information as a safety measure. Or so they say.

Screw this, the day they think they can make me prove my ID online is the day I stop using the internet. We would all be better off without the nanny state watching over it, I will never accept this kind of crap.

What is accepted as "voluntary" will quickly become involuntary and required. Say NO to this!

if you want them giving you health care, food, retirement, dictating what should be taught and how, controlling industries, tapping your phones and assassinating your fellow citizens why is this so bad? this seems like a stupid place to draw the line.

as people spend more and more of their time interacting in virtual worlds instead of the real one this will only become more common.. it makes sense to a point. those who desire the convenience of it will embrace it while those who seek the anonymity of the internet can opt out.

thank you. This is only going to make the Internet a safer place against those such as spammers, hackers and other non-governmental asses. As for the government, it is spying on you since forever.

My first reaction was 'gtfo of my internets'.

Then I read AT's article.

Will dive into the NSTIC PDF when I go home and pour myself a glass of scotch.

So, people can choose the level of privacy for their IDs?

RTFA? What does mean?

Just because something starts as a voluntary measure doesn't mean that it will stay that way.

I like the idea, but if I'm going to actually use it, it would need to only require a very limited amount of personal information, leaving out anything that could be used fraudulently (like my SSN).

So then you're completely happy, because this is going to be spearheaded by private companies.

Seriously, why is no one actually reading the article? I feel like I'm in bizarro world here.

I don't like this idea. I like the idea of a private company like Google offering this but the way US subpoenas have been working lately I wouldn't want to hold any login or ID data within the US if I didn't have to.

Yea using a bank is voluntary as well. Tell me how that goes. I guarantee if this rises up your practically going to need it for any type of job or they will throw it in some other BS making you get it or have your life a total pain.
