Fourteen female United States senators have sent a letter to Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, asking him to lift the ban that keeps women from driving within the kingdom.

The letter - dated July 26 - comes as a major boost for an ongoing social media campaign against the ban.

The bipartisan letter admits that the kingdom has recently taken some steps that advance women's rights, including the appointment of its first woman deputy minister and the establishment of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, "the only university in Saudi Arabia that allows women to study alongside men and where women are allowed to drive motor vehicles on campus."

But the senators feel the country needs to do more, given that its government accepted the majority of recommendations by a United Nations human rights group. The senators' letter says one of these recommendations included putting an end to "all legislation, measures and practices that discriminate against women… including… the prohibition on women driving."

When? Not soon. Nothing our country does would ever make them change their mind. The people of Saudi Arabia have to make that change for themselves.

Oh, don't you know? If there's a topic about women, it will slowly deteriorate into a kitchen/sammich/etc joke thread.

Sadly.

Who cares what they do in Saudi Arabia?

As long as they sell us cheap oil, they can make all women wear Barney the Purple Dinosaur costumes for all I care.

Why are US Senators trying to dictate foreign laws anyway?

Here we go again worrying about the business of other countries. Even though Western culture values equality and freedom, it's not good for us to stick our noses in other people's cultures. And, to be honest, equality doesn't exist. It never has and it never will. We're definitely not free either.

ROFLCOPTER603

As many as the rest of the world. I hate to say this but in the past 1 week, I've encountered 4 women drivers, and NOT ONE of them stopped at the crosswalk.. some even as I was about to cross with one foot on the walk. Heck, one was on the phone.

In contrast, 80% of male drivers I've encountered at the same crosswalk actually stopped even though I hadn't stepped onto the road yet.

At least with veils, the other drivers won't have to deal with them putting on make-up in the rear-view mirror while their driving... 8)

Kidding aside: nothing the Senate does will make them change or reconsider. Waste of effort.

 My God, that'd be so much win. Seriously, these senators should just butt out of Saudia Arabia's business. It's one thing to voice your opinion in private- it's another to make it a public thing.

So a bunch of WOMEN wrote to a guy who thinks women are too stupid to drive, and they thought that this might actually get him to reconsider his country's laws? Hmmm...ya know, I think the Saudi's may be on to something here...

If they lifted the ban on female drivers then there would be more drivers on the road in Saudi. More drivers leads to more cars, more cars leads to higher fuel consumption, higher fuel consumption leads to the increase of local oil & gas demand which might in turn increase the global price of oil. Obviously somebody didn't do their homework before writing this letter. Obviously this is just a load of bollocks and I have just wasted maybe 3 minutes of your time reading this.

While I think it's ridiculous that women can't drive in Saudi Arabia, that is quite frankly no concern of the United States Senate.
