We have the right to protect our waterways, and we can limit commercial sea traffic. Not that difficult, considering we have two agencies to patrol the sealanes: the Coast Guard plus the U.S. Navy.

topsemag55
good point....but what does that have to do with landmines?

Finally a bada** country that stick to what they believe is right. I mean, as long it's not a panzy evil nation that's doing this.

End sarcasm.

There is a reason we are not joining the landmine treaty, that is the DMZ in Korea. Offically I thinkthe US and South Koreaare still at war with North Korea.

You people do realize the U.S is working on a landmine that will only kill enemies and can/will be disabled after the war is over.

Moo-Moo-Milk

I remember seeing some prototype footage of the new digital mines on a TV show. They look awesome in how effective they are against personnel and vehicles. When you done you can just turn them off and take them home too.

lol. Pack em up and save them for later. That's awesome.

The one I am talking about is about the size of a small crate and has grenade (armor piercing copper headed) launchers for vehicles, and clamor like ones for personnel (the fools who try to approach it). It uses sensors to detect targets. It can also be switched on or off by the battle field commander, and be used for intelligence gathering (those previously mentioned sensors). I wish I could find the video of it.:(

The world isn't just black and white, There is a reason for this, look at the area between North and South Korea, two nations that area legally at war. There is the reason why we don't want to sign the treaty.

The nations of North and South Korea are separated by a "Demilitarized Zone", That is a buffer zone set up after the Korean war in the 60s (or maybe the 50s don't remember the date off the top of my head). This area is heavly mined and no body is really allowed in.

No... the US and NK were never "legally" in a war. It was a "policing action" and I'm pretty sure Congress never declared war.... so we can't still be in a state of war if it never existed...

Considering how many kids and innocents get killed by land-mines, I'm disappointed in this decision.

Thank World War 2. That war is the cause of many problems in the world today and is why the US is so much more active in world afairs. In many cases, it's needed. In many cases, countries ask for US military assistance. Do you really think the US would have bases all over the world if the hosting countries didn't want the US to protect them?

It's understandable why someone would want to stop using them (kids and innocents setting them off after the war ended). But theyre extremely useful during the war. i agree with the US government, so long as they pursue technology that will allow them to safely disarm them once the war is over

Yea start putting landmines infront of your house to prepare for the enemy invasion. Just hide them under the ground so the enemy can't see them. Then when the war is over just hope none of your kids step on them while they are playing in the backyard.

Western landmines are the least of our problems....

The ones from WW2 and the civil wars in 3rd world countries are the biggest issue. Modern militaries barely ever use them, but militants just get their hands on them and place em evreywhere. You think the US fought a all out war all over africa for landmines to be maiming people there?

NATO should stop banning weaponry that its forces know how to use and rather concentrate on taking these things away from the 3rd world countries...

Some interesting facts. There are an estimated 60 to 110 million ACTIVE landmines in the world. 2 million people are injured or killed by landmines every year (30%-40% of which are children).

They're a terrible weapon. They're not even designed to kill, they're designed to maim people so that they then become a burden of resources.

Because there are aftermaths to laying landmines, people have been dying in Europe for quite some time after the war because they could not remove all of them.

We have all kinds of insane weapon tech that would probably blow our minds if they ever actually had to be used.

lol, anti-escalision weapons.... ever heard of the psycho warheads? there are 2 saturn 5 rockets parked under boston bay. if we were ever in a big enough conflict, we could launch them. what do they do? you say? the cargo bay has 20 6 foot wide spheres in i. each sphere, a 20 megaton nuclear bomb. one of the rockets could wipe out europe. they were built in the early 80's as a total fail-safe to nuclear deterrence.

I thought it was old news that the US is one of the countries that isn't part of the ban agreement. So I'm not surprised policy still hasn't changed. If the US were to join the ban, then they would have to demine the entire Korean DMZ.

So the banning of a pathetic excuse of a weapon that inflicts massive collateral damage on innocent bystanders years after actual conflicts end = turning into pansies?

Sure.

Good thing. Why handicap ourselves? These treaties mean nothing, when a large scale conflict breaks out all bets are off.

We havn't had a large scale conflict sense World War 2.. The Cold War was shadow games, and the Korean War, as well as the Vietnam war.. Were war's of choices against 3rd world countries.. Major wars do not exist any more, if they did human civilization would not last long because it would lead to a nuclear exchange.

smart landmine replacement

Thanks for finding the video of the smart mine, I looked every where for it.

This by itself is good enough reason not to have the US ban mines.
